MEN'S SOCCER TO FACE MILWAUKEE ON THURSDAY

IUPUI (0-5) hits the road to take on Milwaukee (3-4) on Thursday on ESPN+

3/23/2021 12:24:00 PM

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The IUPUI men's soccer will be back on the road on Wednesday (Mar. 24) when the Jaguars take on Milwaukee at 1:00 p.m. CT (2 Eastern) at MKE's Engelmann Stadium. Wednesday's contest will be aired on ESPN+ beginning right at kickoff and attendance is limited to player guests only via a pass list.

On the pitch, IUPUI (0-5) is looking for a change of fortune in what's been a tough spring to date. Head coach Brian Barnett's team dropped a 2-0 count to Wright State at a rainy, windy Michael A. Carroll Stadium last Thursday (Mar. 19). The Jags yielded a goal in the game's 19th minute and a key score in the 48th minute to ultimately seal the win. IUPUI matched WSU with 12 shot attempts and earned eight corner kicks, but put just four shots on frame in the defeat.

The offense has remained in an extended slumber through five games as IUPUI has scored just two goals - one from each Matthew Skaar and Anthony Saporito - thus far. Defensively, IUPUI has yielded exactly two scores in each of the first five games of the year.

QUOTABLE
"I think right now, it just comes down to that final finishing touch and I think guys working for that extra inch, fighting for that extra little bit of space in those areas and finding a way to get on the end of flank service - the other component to that too is how many shots today did we have that actually hit the target or actually challenged their goalkeeper and forced him to make saves? I think it's few and far between on a day where he probably makes only three or four saves on 12 shots. Unfortunately, that's just not enough. We definitely have guys who are selected throughout the team that are going to go forward and join the attack and we have a way in which we want to do that and we have been talking about having a positive attitude in the attacking half of the field to generate shots," Barnett said following the Wright State game.

ON THE SIDELINES
Head coach Brian Barnett is in his fifth year on the Jaguars' sidelines, having taken over the program just prior to the 2016 campaign. He led the team to the #HLMSOC Tournament Semifinals in 2018 before falling to eventual league champion UIC on penalty kicks. Barnett is joined on the sidelines by John Schwien, who enters his first year with the program.

NEW FACES
IUPUI has six new faces on the roster this year in true freshmen Rayan Choukri, Mandela Cybahiro, Max Guidry, Logan Finnegan, Owen Jarrell and Tyler Kaput. Choukri and Cybahiro were teammates for Millennium Indy and Finnegan, Jarrell and Kaput were all three teammates for Galaxy SC. Four other Jaguars - Tylin Broaders, Nate Pendleton, Lucas Morefield and Ethan Miller - are all in line to make their IUPUI debuts after redshirting last season.

SCOUTING MILWAUKEE
Milwaukee is 3-4 on the year and 1-2 at home with a home win over Wright State (2-1) and losses to UIC (1-2) and Cleveland State (0-1). The Panthers have been outscored 11-10 on the year with their 10 goals coming from three different sources - Paolo Gratton (5), Logan Farrington (3) and Raul Medina (2). Joshua Kidder has a team-high four assists as the Panthers have 13 assists on 10 goals. Farrington has a team-high 34 shot attempts as Milwaukee outshoots foes by more than three attempts per game. In goal, Nick Chiappa has played six of the team's seven matches and has a 1.50 goals against average and 19 saves. He's 2-4 in goal with a shutout.

VERSUS THE RAIDERS (see the entire history here)
IUPUI is 1-3-1 all-time against Milwaukee and 0-2-1 on the road against the Panthers. That said, IUPUI hasn't lost to MKE since 2017 after the two teams played to a 2-2 double overtime draw in 2019 and the Jags winning in Indy in 2018. Milwaukee won the first three games in the series with victories in 2012, 2013 and 2017.

SCHEDULE BREAKDOWN
The Horizon League will compete in a weekly, single round robin format this season that began on Feb. 3. Games will be played every six days.
