INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI volleyball team played one of the Horizon League's top teams, Wright State, to a tough four-set loss inside the Jungle on Saturday (Nov. 6), falling 25-23, 25-27, 25-18, 25-11. The match marked the home finales for fifth-year senior
Rhiannon Schuenemann and senior
Shakana Norfleet.
IUPUI (5-23, 3-14 HL) outhit the Raiders in each of the first two sets, both of which went to the wire, before fading in the final two sets. Freshman
Briana Brown had a game-high 17 kills and
Emily Alan had 11 kills and four blocks.
Allie Pogue had 10 kills and Schuenemann had 22 digs.
"I thought we battled," head coach
Lindsey Froehlich said. "I thought we did a lot of really good things, especially in those first two sets."
The first set had eight ties overall, including at 21, 22 and 23 all. At 23 all, Wright State got a key point when Megan Alders finished a long rally by tipping an attempt just off a
Maddie Haines block and out of bounds for a kill. Sam Ott sealed the set with a service ace.
The second set was tighter than the first as the teams locked up on 10 ties, including at 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. IUPUI had a set point opportunity at 25-24, but saw Wright State get a kill to notch the score. IUPUI got a side out when Haines put down a kill, prompting a WSU timeout. However, IUPUI claimed the set on a Pogue kill, tying the match.
Momentum from the second set win dissipated early in the third as Wright State took an early 8-5 lead. The Jags tied the score at 8-8 after Brown put down consecutive kills before Phillips hammered a left-handed swing into the back corner of the court. After
Millai Madison tied the score at 10-10, WSU responded with four straight points and took control from there. The Jags closed within three, but got no closer as the Raiders captured a 25-18 victory.
The fourth set was all WSU from the opening serve as the Raiders hit .270 and held the Jags to just seven kills and an .023 hitting percentage in a 25-11 win.
Alders led WSU with 12 kills and Jenna Story collected 32 digs from her libero spot.
IUPUI will cap the regular season last weekend when the Jaguars trek to Fort Wayne to face the Mastodons on ESPN+.
