FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IUPUI volleyball team's season came to a close on Friday night (Nov. 12) at Purdue Fort Wayne as the Jaguars fell on the road to the Mastodons in four sets, 25-16, 26-24, 16-25, 25-16. Sophomore middle
Emily Alan led the IUPUI offense with 12 kills and hit .231 and
Briana Brown put down 11 kills.
Katie Crowe had a double-double for the victors with 16 kills and 15 digs as Purdue Fort Wayne (8-23, 6-12 HL) hit .178 for the match.
IUPUI (5-24, 3-15 HL) went down 8-3 in the opening set before Alan powered down three straight kills on the heels of a Brown kill. However, the hosts seized control with six straight points that turned a 12-12 tie into an 18-12 advantage. The Mastodons ultimately rode that wave to a 25-16 victory.
The match hinged on the second set as the Jaguars were unable to seal the victory late. IUPUI led 24-21 after a Crowe service error, but yielded five straight points to allow the hosts escape with a 26-24 win and a decisive 2-0 lead. The Jags put down 13 kills, but also committed 10 errors in hitting .073. Brown and Alan combined on nine of the team's 13 kills for the set.
In the third, IUPUI broke a 6-6 tie and surged out to a 15-8 lead. The Jaguars' offense was clicking throughout the set, hitting .321 with
Millai Madison recording four kills and Brown and
Maddie Haines registering two apiece. Defensively, IUPUI had seven blocks in the set as PFW totaled eight hitting errors. IUPUI also notched four aces in the set with
Brooke Phillips and
Addie Evans each serving up a pair. Unlike the second set, IUPUI was able to get the third to the finish line at 25-16.
However, the tides turned in the fourth as the hosts tallied the opening five points and never looked back. The PFW lead grew to 17-6, fueled by five straight IUPUI hitting errors. Freshman
Atlantis Clendenin came off the bench to end the run with a kill, but it was far too little, too late. The Jags nudged within six points late in the set with Brown on the service line before the Mastodons closed with three straight, winning it 25-16.
Alli Cook and
Rhiannon Schuenemann finished with 12 digs apiece and IUPUI had 14 team blocks with Alan getting a solo and seven block assists. Brown also had seven block assists and Madison had a solo and five assists. Offensively, Phillips had 37 assists in the finale.
