WESTLAKE, Ohio - The IUPUI men's golf team carded an opening round 302 at this week's Tom Tontimonia Invitational at Lakewood Country Club on Monday (Oct. 4) are sit 13th overall heading into Tuesday's final round. The event was shortened to 36 holes due to inclement weather in Northeast Ohio on Monday.
"We need to play better, tougher," head coach
Jamie Broce said. "We need someone to get going and feed off that energy. Right now, we are grinding, but getting in our own way. All our guys are capable, but we just need to get moving in a positive direction."
Scoring was at a premium for the Jaguars as IUPUI made just six birdies as a team and ranked at the bottom of the field in pars. Freshmen
Sam McWilliams and
Morgan Tournemire led the Jaguars as each carded rounds of 74 on Monday. McWilliams accounted for half of the team's birdies, including one on his opening hole of the round, but made double on his final hole of the day to close at 3-over. Tournemire had a steady performance after starting his round with a double, later making a birdie to get back to 1-over. He followed with a bogey and made bogey on his next-to-last dive of the day to end at 3-over 74.
A third freshman,
Colten Girgis, chimed in with a 5-over 76 and sophomore
Taylor Gardner rounded out the scoring four at 7-over 78. Gardner went without a birdie on Monday, making seven bogeys and 11 pars on his card. He was 3-over with five holes to play, but made bogey on four straight as the weather intensified later in the round. Sophomore
Brock Aten rounded out the group with an 84.
Butler leads the 13-team field at 1-under 283 and Oakland is second at even par 284. Purdue Fort Wayne's Kasey Lilly and Dayton's Kyle Schmidt are tied atop the leaderboard at 2-under 69. Five others are knotted at 1-under 70 heading into Tuesday's finale.
Play is slated to resume at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
