CHICAGO - Freshman
Briana Brown put home a game-high 17 kills as part of her team-high eighth double-double of the season, but the Jaguars fell at UIC, 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 25-27, 25-12).
The win gave UIC (11-10, 7-2 HL) a season sweep of the Jaguars. The host Flames hit .228 for the match while IUPUI (3-19, 1-10 HL) was limited to hitting just .121.
UIC got 16 kills from Martina Delucchi and 15 kills and 16 digs from Paola Santiago in the win.
The Flames blitzed the Jags in the opening set as IUPUI put down just four kills and committed five errors in the stanza. UIC built a quick 7-2 lead behind four straight aces from Santiago as part of 10 aces in the opening set.
IUPUI made an adjustment and tightened things up in the second set. The Jags trailed 16-13 but outscored UIC by a 7-1 margin to take a 20-17 lead with
Rhiannon Schuenemann on the service line. UIC fired back with three straight points before getting a side out on a service error.
Allie Pogue came up with a critical kill to bring the Jags even at 22 all before the Flames closed the set with three straight points.
UIC sprinted out to a 5-1 lead in the third set before IUPUI reeled off five straight points to take a 6-5 lead. Things stayed tight throughout, but it looked like the hosts would complete the sweep after building a 23-21 lead after an IUPUI attack error. But the Jags countered with kills from
Sidney Veatch and Brown to prompt a timeout. After the timeout, Brown put down another kill to get the Jags to set point. UIC got a key side out on a Santiago kill and then got to set point after a Delucchi kill. However, a service error tied things up at 25 all and Brown sealed the set with back-to-back kills.
The Flames engulfed IUPUI in the fourth set as the hosts hit .417 and held IUPUI to .074 in sealing the win. The score was 8-7 early before the Flames flipped a switch and ran away to a 25-12 victory.
Brooke Phillips had a team-high 15 digs and 26 assists for the Jaguars while Pogue put down seven kills.
Addie Evans had 10 digs and five assists and both
Millai Madison and
Emily Alan had four blocks each.
IUPUI will continue the three-game trip at Milwaukee on Friday night (Oct. 22) at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
