The WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's and women's swimming and diving teams put up strong performances at the Indiana Intercollegiates, hosted by Purdue on Saturday (Oct. 16) as the men placed second among 10 competing teams and the women finished fourth of 12 squads.

The men's team produced three individual event winners and two runner-up relay teams while the women's team had five individuals collect top-five finishes. The men's squad stacked up 447.5 points to easily outdistance third-place Ball State while the women had 222 points to finish fourth. Host Purdue swept the team titles as the men collected 824 points and the women finished with 641.5.

"It was a great day of competing for the Jags. We were able to do some special things in the pool today," head coach Damion Dennis said. "From winning races to making NCAA cuts on the boards, it was a total team effort. It was a lot of fun to jump in the pool and compete with all the great teams from Indiana.

"I'm really proud of this team and how we were able to come together, give it our all for each other and give the competition our best. The program took some huge steps forward today."

The men's 200 medley relay team of Riley Lohse, Logan Kelly, Spencer Jyawook and Kevin Burke opened with a second-place effort with a time of 1:31.95 to start the scoring. It ended up being a precursor of what was to come from the men's squad as Jyawoook would later chime in with a win in the 100 fly in a time of 48.68 and Kelly won the 100 breast at 56.84.

Burke was runner-up in the 50 free at 20.78 as he was outtouched by three-hundredths of a second.

The team showcased its depth on the men's side as Nick Dibley and Dane Charleston finished fourth and fifth in the 200 free, clocking times of 1:44.43 and 1:45.39, respectively. Jason Harary placed fourth in the 100 IM at 52.25, just ahead of Kelly's time of 52.75.

In the 100 free, Wes Wickens was third at 47.16 and rookie Kaden Parker was fourth at 47.77. Lohse was fifth in the 100 back at 52.08, just ahead of Ben Kimmel's time of 52.11. Dibley doubled back with an impressive victory in the 500 free, touching at 4:41.03 while Nicolas Gallego was fifth at 4:49.93.

The men capped the day with a runner-up finish in the 200 free relay at 1:24.10.

On the women's side, the Jaguars' 200 medley relay was disqualified but the team refused to allow it become a damper on the day.

Freshman Emmaleigh Zietlow placed seventh in the 200 free at 1:55.98 and Caylee Hamilton followed with a sixth-place performance in the 50 free at 24.50. Avery Brooks clocked a time of 24.81 to place ninth.

Junior Emma Theobald placed fifth in the 100 IM at 1:00.20 and rookie Lillian Brandt followed with an eighth-place finish in the 100 free. Theobald backed up her IM effort with a third-place finish in the 100 back, touching at 58.07.

Zietlow, one of IUPUI's distance aces, was fifth in the 500 free at 5:08.46. The women closed the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 200 free relay.

On the boards, Sadie Smith had an impressive day, taking fifth on both the 1m (278.90) and 3m (269.30) boards. Her 1-meter effort was an NCAA Zone cut. Freshman Isabella Smith finished seventh off the 1-meter boards with a score of 250.90.

On the men's side, freshman Alex Scott earned an NCAA Zone qualifying score of 308.50 and placed sixth overall. He was eighth off the 3-meter boards with a score of 229.70.

"Today was a great day for the Jaguars," head diving coach Eric Barnes said. "Freshman Alex Scott made an NCAA Zone qualifying score in the 1-meter, as did Sadie. Both of their scores were PR's.

"It was a season PR for Isabella in the 1-meter too. The men's divers showed good grit following a shaky first event. We're looking forward now to the Horizon League season opener next week with Milwaukee."

IUPUI will host Milwaukee at the Natatorium next Saturday (Oct. 23) at 4:00 p.m..
