YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Three Jaguars finished with double-digit kills but IUPUI dropped its second-straight match to Youngstown State, falling 3-1 (21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 24-26) on Tuesday (Jan. 26).
The Jags were led by sophomore
Allie Pogue, who finished with 17 kills while hitting .406.
Madeline Haines had her second-straight game with double-figure kills, notching 15, and Emily Allan tallied 11 kills, hitting .500 in the match.
Darragh Dixon dished out 42 assists to pace the offense.
IUPUI (0-2) outhit Youngstown State (2-0) .218 to .180 and finished with nine more kills but the service game hurt IUPUI for the second-straight contest. The Jags finished the game with 15 service errors to just eight for Youngstown State and allowed 10 service aces for the Penguins.
In the first set, IUPUI fell behind 17-12 but used a 4-0 run featuring kills by Pogue and Alan and a block by the duo to pull within one. After again falling down by three, the Jags got another kill by Alan and an ace by Pogue to get back to 20-19 but that was closest the Jags would get as Youngstown State closed out the set 25-21.
The two teams traded points in the second set until Youngstown State went on a 4-0 run with four-straight aces to take a 16-12 lead. A block by Haines and Alan and an error from Youngstown State helped IUPUI get back in the set at 18-17 but two kills by the Penguins and an error by Alan gave Youngstown State the momentum back and IUPUI never got closer than four the rest of the way.
Needing a win in the third set to stay alive in the match, IUPUI turned to Pogue. The sophomore finished the third set with nine kills, hitting a blistering .727 in the set. IUPUI's first big run of the set came with Pogue on the service line after a kill by Pogue tied the set at 11. Back-to-back kills by Haines were followed by back-to-back blocks by Haines and Alan before two errors made it 17-11 in favor of IUPUI. Youngstown State pulled back to within one at 19-18 but Pogue finished out the set with four kills to give the Jags a 25-21 win.
No one had control in the fourth set until a 4-0 run by the Penguins on four errors by IUPUI made the score 17-13 in favor of the home team. IUPUI got back within one on a 3-0 with kills by Pogue and Haines and tied the set at 20 after two kills from Alan. With the score tied at 22, IUPUI had its next attack blocked and added an error on the next point, giving Youngstown State match point.
Corrissa Remter fought of the set point with a kill and Haines tied the set at 24 with another kill. After the Penguins picked up a kill, Remter's next attack went long to end the match.
IUPUI will be back in action next Monday (Feb. 1) and Tuesday (Feb. 2) with matches at Green Bay.
