INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI got a career-high 30 points from
Rachel McLimore but the Jags fell in a double overtime thriller to Milwaukee 85-83 on Saturday (Jan. 23). The loss is the second-straight for IUPUI after starting the conference season 6-0.
McLimore was to go-to player for IUPUI (8-2, 6-2 Horizon) at the end of the regulation with the score tied at 62 and four minutes left. McLimore scored the last seven points for the Jags in regulation, including a layup with 26 seconds left to tie the game at 69 and force overtime.
In overtime, IUPUI got the ball in to
Macee Williams, who finished the game with a 22-point, 13-rebound double-double before fouling out in double overtime. Down by three, Williams hit a jumper in the paint and after an answer by Milwaukee (15-1, 12-0 Horizon), Williams hit another jumper to pull the Jags within one.
Down one with just over 30 seconds left in overtime, Milwaukee missed a jumper and McLimore pulled down the rebound while getting fouled. The redshirt junior stepped to the line and hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie up the game. On Milwaukee's next possession, McLimore picked up a steal but
Destiny Perkins' layup fell off the rim and the game went to double overtime.
It was the first double overtime game for IUPUI since Jan. 28, 2016 when the Jags beat Denver at home.
Milwaukee got the scoring going to start the frame but McLimore matched her career-high with a jumper on the next possession. After a block by McLimore on the defensive end,
Morgan Allen, who had six points, split a pair of free throws to put IUPUI up one. Megan Walsted, who led Milwaukee with 23 points, scored on the next Panther possession and Williams committed her fifth foul on the offensive end to give Milwaukee the ball back.
The Panthers hit another basket to go up three but McLimore responded with another layup to set a career-high. Two more Milwaukee free throws pushed the lead to 85-82 but Allen drew a foul and again split her free throws to make it a two point game.
After a missed three by Milwaukee, IUPUI had the ball with five seconds left and got it to McLimore who got in the lane but could not get the turnaround jumper to go.
McLimore finished the game 12-for-16 from the free throw line, both career-highs and matched her career-high with eight rebounds. She also became the first Jaguar not named
Macee Williams to score 30 points in a game since
Danielle Lawrence scored 38 against Memphis back in 2017. The Zionsville, Ind., native also led the Jaguars with four assists and four steals.
Macee Williams notched her sixth double-double of the season and rebounded from her worst performance of the year leading the way on the glass as IUPUI outrebounded Milwaukee 54-43 and 23-12 on the offensive end.
The Jags once again dominated in the paint, outscoring the Panthers 48-26 inside and finished with 40 free throws to Milwaukee's 22. The big difference was Milwaukee making 16 of their free throws (73%) to IUPUI hitting just 27 (68%).
For the second straight night, IUPUI struggled on the offensive end against the best defense in the league, shooting percentage-wise. The Jags finished the game shooting a season-low 35 percent from the floor and only managed to shoot less than 20 percent in the first half.
The game was a game of runs during regulation as IUPUI maintained the lead for 30:48 compared to just 9:48 for Milwaukee. The game featured 11 lead changes and 16 ties. IUPUI's largest lead was 11 and it looked like the Jags had chances to pull away, but Milwaukee always responded near the end of quarters to keep the game close.
IUPUI will be on the road for its next four games, beginning with a trip to Green Bay for games on Friday (Jan. 29) and Saturday (Jan. 30).
