INDIANAPOLIS - A pair of former IUPUI men's basketball standouts inked new professional contacts recently as both Alex Young and
Ahmed Ismail signed to play in the Egyptian Superleague. The duo teamed together for Al Ahly Cairo of the Egyptian Superleague last season, helping them to both the league and cup finals after a second-place regular season finish.
Young was named the Afrobasket.com All-Egyptian Superleague Import of the Year and first team all-league. That came on the heels of an incredible season with the Beijing Bucks of the Chinese NBL in which he averaged 34.4 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game during the 2019 season. The 30-year old Young has played professionally in five different countries on three different continents, having also had stints in France, Israel, Italy and Russia. He also played in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) two years ago with a team called Midwest Dream.
Ismail, a native of Egypt, signed a deal with Al Gezira Cairo for the upcoming season. The 25-year old 7-foot-1 center averaged 7.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting 59 percent from the field in his lone season at IUPUI in 2018-2019. He also ranked third on the team with 19 blocked shots and shot 69 percent from the foul line that season.
