YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The IUPUI women's track and field team put up a star studded effort at this weekend's Horizon League Indoor Championships, finishing fourth among the nine-team field with 49 points. No star shone brighter than Katelyn Murphy's as the IUPUI standout won the mile and finished fourth in the 3,000m event on Sunday (Mar. 1) and was named the Women's Championship Outstanding Performer, Running.

Murphy closed the weekend with 25 points in the Jaguars' total, thanks to a pair of individual victories. That said, head coach Antonio McDaniel's team continued to add to its repertoire as the Jaguars tallied points in 12 of the meet's 17 events offered.

"I'm incredibly proud of how our team competed this weekend. Our ultimate team goal this weekend was fourth, but we knew we honestly would have to have close to a perfect meet for that to happen. I'm not sure I will ever say a meet was perfect, but this was mighty close," McDaniel said. "We scored in 12 different events and outperformed in many of those events.

"There's no way around it. We knew a lot of our points would have to come from Katelyn and wow, did she deliver. She ultimately decided she wanted to triple and she gave everything she had in each of those events. Two wins under .1 seconds is not something you see everyday."

In Sunday's field events, junior Lana Pham matched her personal best in the high jump, clearing 1.56m (5' 1 1/4'') to place seventh overall. The triple jump duo of Kelly Zehnder and Kayla Wolnik also added to the team's point total, placing seventh and eighth, respectively. Zehnder jumped 10.85m (35' 7 1/4'') on her fifth attempt while Wolnik went a personal best 10.82m (35' 6'') on her final attempt of the day.

Amani Miles placed fourth in the 400m by shattering the school record by more than a second with a run of 56.19. Her busy day also included a spot in the 200m finals as she clocked a time of 25.20 and a leg of the Jaguars' 4x400 relay to end the meet.

Sabrina Elder placed seventh in the finals of the 800m event with a time of 2:19.44 after exerting a major effort in Saturday's prelims to punch her ticket to Sunday's finals.

Murphy continued her impressive meet early in the day, winning yet another photo finish in the mile. She edged Youngstown State's Nicole Squatrito by three-hundredths of a second as she crossed in a time of 5:06.07. Junior Jean Carson just missed scoring as well, placing ninth in a personal best time of 5:12.94.

Murphy was clearly running on fumes by the time the 3,000m race hit the line as she placed fourth in a time of 9:59.96. Alexandra Schwartz was 12th at 10:26.25 and Janine Orvis was 17th at 10:31.92.

"Conference is what we train for but having the support from your teammates is what keeps us coming back for more," Murphy said. "This weekend was a major mental confidence booster for myself, and more importantly, I had fun with it. I'm so blessed to be surrounded by such strong, supporting women everyday."

The meet ended with the quartet of Elder, Miles, Sophia Taylor and Wolnik spinning a time of 4:00.82 in the 4x400 relay for the third-quickest time in program history.

"Coach Chew has been doing one heck of a job with her group and it really showed this weekend," McDaniel said. "She does it all - jumps, combined events, vault, et cetera, and in all those areas, her athletes showed up huge for us this weekend. She's one heck of a coach."

Youngstown State edged Oakland by 33 points for the team title while Milwaukee was third with 123 points. IUPUI was a distance fourth with 49 points, finishing just ahead of Detroit Mercy's 42.5 points.

The Jaguars will open the outdoor slate on Mar. 19 as the team will split among the UNLV Spring Invitational, Yellow Jacket Invitational and nearby Stan Lyons Invitational to kickoff the campaign.
