Box Score 2 NASHVILLE – IUPUI women's tennis picked up its first victory of the season with a 6-1 win over Tennessee State on Sunday (Feb. 16). The Jags picked up the win after dropping their match against Lipscomb 7-0 to start the weekend.
Against the Tigers, IUPUI earned the doubles point with all three matches going in favor of IUPUI. The freshmen duo of Diya Matta and Marta Krakowski earned a 6-2 win at No. 3 in the first match to finish and Gabrielle Ochalik and Krystal Grubb gave THE Jags the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 1. IUPUI also got a 6-4 win by Samantha Hayward and Ines Rivera at No. 2.
"We put together a full team effort today," said head coach Jason Suscha. "The team stayed focused and did what they are supposed to do; longer rallies and attach the short ball."
In singles play Matta earned the first point for the Jags with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4. Tennessee State picked up its lone point of the match next with a win at No. 1. After that it was all IUPUI.
Grubb earned a 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 and the Jags closed out the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win by Hayward at No. 3. To finish up play, Krakowski earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 and Rivera won her No. 6 match 6-0, 6-2.
The win marks the first victory for Coach Suscha at the helm of IUPUI.
