INDIANAPOLIS – A big third quarter led IUPUI (10-6, 4-1 Horizon) past Northern Kentucky (8-8, 2-3 Horizon) as the Jags beat the Norse 89-61 on Thursday night (Jan. 9). The Jags were fueled by a career night for
Rachel McLimore, who finished the game with 26 points.
McLimore, who previously scored a career-high 18 points earlier this season, finished the game 10-for-13 from the field, hitting 2-for-3 from three and went 4-for-5 from the stripe.
Macee Williams was also nearly flawless from the floor, going 8-for-10 from the floor on route to an 18 point night. Williams finished just shy of her 10
th double-double of the season, finishing with nine rebounds.
IUPUI's offense continues to be unstoppable in Horizon League play as the Jags have now scored at least 72 points in every league game this season. The Jags shot a season-high 60% (35-55) from the floor and have now shot over 50 percent from the field in each of the last three games. The Jags also dished out 21 assists with
Destiny Perkins and Williams each tallying four. In total, seven Jaguars finished the game with at least two assists.
"I think we are playing inside out," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "They are doing a great job of throwing the ball inside but we aren't forcing it and getting back out to our shooters. We are moving the ball and anytime we play unselfish good things will happen."
The Jags again held the advantage on the glass, pulling down 33 rebounds to 23 for Northern Kentucky. Behind Williams,
Katelyn O'Reilly was second on the team with five boards. IUPUI also crushed the Norse inside, outscoring NKU 50-28 in the paint.
While the offense continues to shine, the defense isn't far behind. IUPUI held the Norse to 61 points, allowing 20 points in the fourth quarter after the game had been decided. IUPUI held leading scorer Molly Glick to just three points and second-leading scorer Ally Niece to two.
"I think our ladies are doing a really good job of focusing on every opponent we play," said Parkinson. "They are doing a great job of playing every possession and not looking ahead and making sure that we continue to get better every time."
Both
Sydney Roule and
Holly Hoopingarner finished just shy of double-figures, finishing with nine AND O'Reilly scored seven. Every Jaguar made it in to the game and scored.
IUPUI took control of the game in the third quarter as McLimore took over. The redshirt sophomore scored 18 points in the quarter, outscoring Northern Kentucky 18-13 by herself. The Jags started the quarter on a 16-2 run that featured seven points from McLimore and four from Hoopingarner. McLimore hit the next two IUPUI baskets to push the lead to 58-35.
"Our team was just running and pushing the tempo," said McLimore. "We were running and getting out on the break and they were hitting me at the right time. I got a couple of easy buckets and it got me going."
Northern Kentucky cut the lead to 60-41 with 2:46 left but the Jags shut the Norse out for the rest of the quarter, outscoring NKU 10-0. Williams started the run with a jumper and Roule hit her third three of the game. Those baskets were followed by five more points by McLimore to put IUPUI up 70-41 after three quarters.
IUPUI's largest lead of the night came in the fourth quarter after a 5-0 run that began with a
Morgan Allen layup and was capped by a jumper from
Destiny Perkins.
