INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's basketball won its fifth-straight game, taking down Wright State 80-60 on Saturday (Jan. 11). The Jags were led by another stellar performance from
Macee Williams, who finished with 32 points.
With the win, IUPUI (11-6, 5-1) is now the only team in the Horizon League with one loss in conference play. Wright State fell to 4-2 in the Horizon and is 9-8 overall.
Williams finished just one point shy of her career-high that she set earlier this season and did most of her damage in the third quarter as the Jags started to pull away. Williams finished the quarter with 14 points in the frame and scored IUPUI's first 12 points of the quarter. In the third, Williams finished 7-for-8 from the field. The junior finished the game 12-of-19 from the floor and 8-for-11 from the free throw line.
"I credit our team for really making it a priority to get her the ball," said Parkinson. "Also Macee slowed down and was more patient. If they are going to double she will kick it out, if they aren't she makes really good post moves. She was a handful tonight."
Katelyn O'Reilly had one of her best games of the season, finishing second on the team with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting and led the Jags with nine rebounds.
Rachel McLimore tallied another double-figure game, scoring 13 points.
IUPUI finished the game shooting 49.2% from the floor but was on fire after the halftime break, hitting 62.1% in the third and fourth quarters. The Jags took advantage of nine Wright State turnovers in the second half, turning those errors in to 14 points. For the game the Jags held an 18-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Jags also made it a priority to get in the paint and finished with multiple open layups on route to a 46-24 advantage on points in the paint. This was helped by the Jags dominating Wright State on the boards. The Jags outrebounded the top rebounding team in the league by 12 (46-34) and held a 12-7 lead on the offensive glass.
It was a close, hard-fought battle in the first half with IUPUI using a 9-0 run in the first quarter to turn a five-point deficit in to a four-point lead. McLimore scored five points during the run and Williams added the other four.
Wright State came back to take a five-point lead halfway through the second quarter but the Jags rattled off six-straight to jump back ahead. After the Raiders tied the game on a free throw, IUPUI held Wright State scoreless for almost two minutes as the Jags took control. Williams started the run with a layup and O'Reilly added a jumper. A jumper and two free throws by Williams had IUPUI up 32-24. Wright State hit a jumper with 30 seconds left but O'Reilly answered with a buzzer beating jumper to put the Jags up eight at the half.
The third belonged to Williams, who scored six-straight early on to push the lead to 12. Later in the quarter, a Hoopingarner three and a jumper by Williams gave IUPUI a 15-point lead that they would carry in to the fourth.
Wright State scored the first two points of the quarter to cut the lead to 13 but that is the closest they would get the rest of the way. Four points from O'Reilly and two Williams free throws earned IUPUI is first 20-point lead of the game. When Roule hit a three with 4:31 left in the game IUPUI hit 70 points for the seventh-straight game, the longest such streak since scoring at least 70 in eight-straight games in 2014.
The game was capped with a three from
Natalie Andersen to give the Jags 80 points for a third-straight game. It is the first time in IUPUI's Division I era (1998-99) the Jags have reached the 80-point mark in three-straight and first time overall since 1995.
