ATLANTA – It was a quick trip to Georgia Tech for IUPUI and the Jags were not able to come away with a win, falling in five sets to Lipscomb and getting swept by the host Yellow Jackets to end the night.
Rachel Hickey was named to the All-Tournament Team after leading IUPUI (1-5) on defense with a career-high 32 digs in the first match of the day and 11 digs in the nightcap.
LIPSCOMB 3, IUPUI 2
IUPUI dropped a heart-breaker, falling in five sets to Lipscomb in the first game of the Hyatt Regency Invitational for the Jaguars. IUPUI held a 12-11 lead in the final set before surrendering the last four points to lose.
Maddie Dean led IUPUI on offense, matching a career-high the junior set earlier this year, with 18 kills. Dean also collected her second double-double of the season with 10 digs.
McKayla Wright finished with 17 kills and eight digs and freshman
Allie Pogue hit double-digit kills for the first time in her career with 11, while hitting .269. Pogue also finished with a career-high five blocks.
On the defensive end,
Rachel Hickey led the Jaguars with a career-high 32 digs.
Haley Hoffman was stellar at the net finishing with 10 blocks and the Jaguars finished with 15 team blocks.
Rebecca Schlechte added five blocks to go along with 47 assists and
Corrissa Remter added four.
It was a back and forth match with the Bisons, both teams evenly match as IUPUI hit .189 and Lipscomb hit .188. The Jags finished with seven less digs than Lipscomb (63-70) but outblocked the Bisons 15-13.
The first set went to Lipscomb 25-21 but the Jags bounced back in set two, winning by the same score. The Jags took an early 8-5 lead after scoring four-straight points, capped by a block from the duo of Remter and Wright. Lipscomb bounced back with four-straight of its own. With Lipscomb up 10-9, IUPUI took control of the set with an 8-1 run capped by a block from Pogue and Hoffman and an ace by Remter. Things would go back and forth until Dean finished the set with a kill to tie the match.
Neither team had a three-point lead in the third set until, tied at 14, IUPUI went on a with a kill from Wright, kill from Pogue and a block by Remter and Pogue to go up 17-14. The Jags would push the lead to five with a kill from Dean and another ace by Remter to go up 22-17. Lipscomb responded with five-straight to tie the set but two-straight points by IUPUI gave the Jags set point. Lipscomb fought off both set points to tie the set at 24 but Hoffman and Wright scored back-to-back kills to take set three.
The Jaguars were forced in to a fifth set after losing set four 25-19 and not helping their own cause by committing six service errors in the frame.
IUPUI opened up the deciding set with four-straight points but after a timeout by Lipscomb, the Bisons responded with five-straight to take a 5-4 lead. After Lipscomb took an 11-8 lead after an error by Dean, IUPUI ripped off four-straight points to take a 12-11 lead with two kills by Wright and a kill and solo block by Pogue. That forced another timeout by Lipscomb but once again the Bisons responded out of the timeout, scoring the last four points to win the match.
GEORGIA TECH 3, IUPUI 0
The Jaguars' trip to Atlanta ended with a sweep at the hands of the host Yellow Jackets. The Jags struggled on offense, hitting a season-low .067 as a team and did not have a player finish in double-digit kills as
McKayla Wright led IUPUI with nine.
On defense, IUPUI managed to outblock Georgia Tech 5-2 with senior
Haley Hoffman finishing with three blocks and freshman
Corrissa Remter adding two.
Georgia Tech jumped out quickly on the Jags taking the first set 25-14 as the Yellow Jackets hit .433 to IUPUI's .097 in the first frame.
The Jags hung tough with Georgia Tech in the second frame leading late after a 5-0 run. Down 18-14, Wright started the run with a kill and it finished with back-to-back Yellow Jacket errors. Later in the frame, IUPUI earned set point with a kill from Wright but the Yellow Jackets responded with three-straight points to win the set.
In the third set with the score tied at seven, Georgia Tech took control of the frame with an 8-0 run and the Jags were never able to get back in the set, losing 25-12.
