JAGS PICK UP 3-1 WIN AGAINST PURDUE FORT WAYNE

Fort Wayne native McKayla Wright led the Jaguar offense with 14 kills.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – IUPUI volleyball broke a three-match losing streak, taking down in-state rival Purdue Fort Wayne, 3-1 on Tuesday night (Sept. 10). The Jags picked up the win behind a double-double from Fort Wayne native McKayla Wright.

The senior led the Jags (2-4) on offense with 14 kills and added 12 digs, second on the team, for her third double-double of the season. Wright has now finished with double-digit kills in five of her six matches this year.

Head coach Lindsey Froehlich's squad was outhit by Purdue Fort Wayne (2-5) .223 to .190 and the Mastodons finished with more blocks (10-5) and more digs (69-66) but the Jags were able to finish with seven aces to just five for Purdue Fort Wayne.

"It's always good to get a win on the road against another Indiana team," said Froehlich. "Purdue Fort Wayne has a good program and is a tough place to play. We fought through some challenging mental moments to switch our focus on where we would get the next point. I'm proud of how we were able to fight through today and look to continue taking steps forward."

Freshman Allie Pogue and sophomore Hannah Oehlberg each added nine kills and senior Haley Hoffman added eight kills. Rebecca Schlechte paced the offense for IUPUI with 33 kills and Regan Trueblood added 10.

The Mastodons jumped out to a 12-6 lead early in the first set but IUPUI came back and took a 14-13 lead after kills by Corrissa Remter and Pogue and three-straight setting errors by Purdue Fort Wayne. The teams would go back and forth but IUPUI took control of the set with three-straight points and kills by Kaitlyn Johnson and Maddie Dean gave the Jags set point. After a Purdue Fort Wayne point, IUPUI ended the set with another kill by Johnson.

The Jags fell in set two 25-17 as IUPUI hit just .054 for the frame and allowed Purdue Fort Wayne to hit a blistering .500.

The teams traded points in set three until Purdue Fort Wayne opened up a four-point lead with a 3-0 run. The Jags remained down until three-straight kills by Oehlberg knotted the third set at 18. The next eight points were alternated until Purdue Fort Wayne won two-straight to earn set point. The Jags responded with another kill from Oehlberg and one from Wright to earn their own set point but Purdue Fort Wayne would fight that one off. After Oehlberg's sixth kill of the set, IUPUI earned a 27-25 set win with an ace by Schlechte.

Set four started out quickly for the Jags as IUPUI scored the first five points of the frame and maintained a lead until the Mastodons tied the set at 11. It remained a tight set until the Jags held a 21-19 lead and Purdue Fort Wayne rattled off four-straight to go up 23-21. Before the set could slip away, IUPUI got a kill from Hoffman and block by Hoffman and Wright to tie up the frame. A ball handling error by the Mastodons gave the Jags match point and an attacking error sealed the deal and gave IUPUI its second win of the season.

Non-conference tournament play continues for IUPUI this weekend as the Jags will head to Southern Illinois to take on the Salukis, Alabama State and Memphis.
