JAGS TO TAKE ON EASTERN ILLINOIS ON TUESDAY

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team will step away from Horizon League play on Tuesday (Oct. 1) when the Jaguars take on Eastern Illinois (3-4-1) at 2:00 p.m. Central at EIU's Lakeside Field. IUPUI enters play on the heels of an emotional 2-1 double overtime win over Green Bay in Horizon League play while EIU is unbeaten in its last two contests following Saturday's double overtime draw with Denver. 

MATCH INFO 
  • Tuesday's match will kickoff at 2:00 p.m. Central (3 Eastern) at EIU's Lakeside Field. 
  • There will be no broadcast of the contest, but live stats will be available at kickoff. 
THE SERIES
  • IUPUI is 6-4-6 all-time against Eastern Illinois and 1-3-2 in the six meetings in Charleston.
  • The series began in 1999 when the Jaguars defeated the Panthers, 2-1, in Charleston. 
  • The most recent meeting was a 1-1 double overtime draw in Indianapolis on Oct. 25, 2017. Michael Buck worked all 110 minutes of that match in net while Uriel Macias tallied the Jaguars' goal in the game's 64th minute. The Jags went down in the opening five minutes before drawing even in the middle of the second half. 
JAG SCRATCHES
  • IUPUI has had a flair for the dramatic in Horizon League play, tipping Northern Kentucky 2-1 on a Yan Souza goal in the 89th minute and on Saturday, ousting Green Bay in double overtime on a Tommy Patacca header in the 104th minute. 
  • Seniors Souza and Alan Aguilar are tied with a team-high seven points (3 goals, 1 assist each) while Gianni Catenacci has a team-high three assists. 
  • Senior midfielder Pedro Valladao was named one of 30 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award on Sept. 23. He was one of just two selections from the Horizon League and was the lone selection from the Division I schools in the state of Indiana.  
  • Souza was named the Horizon League's Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 16 after tallying the game-winner in the Jags' 2-1 win at Northern Kentucky in the game's 89th minute. Souza took a feed from Aguilar and drove a shot off an NKU defender and into the open net. Cincinnati-native Chris Workman also scored his first career goal in that game as he was playing just minutes from his hometown.
  • The Jaguars win at NKU was IUPUI's first regular season road win since September 2014 and first regular season league road win since October 2012. 
  • IUPUI launched year three of the Jaguars' 'Real Men Read' program earlier this fall, having worked with seven IPS Schools, spanning 16 fourth grade classrooms. 
  • Aguilar fueled the Jaguars' 2-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne, tallying goals in the 61st and 64th minutes. The winner came off assists from Catenacci and Fernando Borges and he added insurance just more than three minutes later by converting the fourth penalty kick of his career.  
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Quinn McCallion has been brilliant this season, registering a 0.94 goals against average and 24 saves in 666 minutes of action. He registered his lone shutout of the season against Purdue Fort Wayne. 
  • Patacca has only been off the field for a total of 13 minutes all season and took his first break of the year in the Green Bay game on Sept. 28. Catenacci is second on the team with 640 minutes of action. 
  • IUPUI went 5-10-4 last season and 4-3-1 in Horizon League play, earning a spot in the league's postseason tournament. The Jags then won the program's first postseason match since 2007 by upsetting Green Bay in the opening round. IUPUI later took eventual league champion UIC to penalty kicks in the semifinals round. 
  • The Jaguars were picked to finish seventh in the Horizon League, according to the league's preseason polls.  
  • IUPUI returns its top two scorers from a season ago in senior midfielder Alan Aguilar (11 points) and sophomore back Corey Goede (eight points). In addition, McCallion (1.22 GAA) returns in net and five other starters - Tommy PataccaCameron PetersenAnthony Saporito, Shives and Pedro Valladao - all return. 
  • All total, IUPUI returns 14 of the team's 17 goals from a season ago. 
  • Head coach Brian Barnett is in his fourth season on the Jaguars' sidelines. 
SCOUTING EASTERN ILLINOIS
  • EIU is 3-4-1 on the season, but 3-1-1 in their past five matches with wins over Saint Xavier, Bradley and Belmont. EIU is 2-0 at home this year with the wins over Saint Xavier and Belmont. 
  • EIU has been outscored 12-9 and outshot 125-50 on the year, but is limiting foes to a 1.45 goals against average. 
  • Shady Omar has a team-high two goals and five points while Cameron Behm has a goal and two assists. Davi Girardi and Munir Sherali have accounted for EIU's two game-winners.  
  • Jonathan Burke has played 634 of the team's 744 minutes in net, amassing a 1.70 GAA and 34 saves in his seven appearances.   
  • Kiki Lara is in his fifth season on the EIU sidelines and owns an 18-50-12 career record.
