The IUPUI women's soccer team will move into the second week of the season, looking to build on a 1-1 start. The Jaguars will host Western Illinois to cap a home doubleheader on Friday night (Aug. 30) at Carroll Stadium at 7:00 p.m.. The men's match with California Baptist will precede the match at 4:00 p.m.. Head coach
Chris Johnson's squad will cap the two-game week at Southern Illinois on Sunday (Sept. 1) at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.
MATCH INFO
- Friday's match will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Tommy Barrett is on the call. In addition, live stats will be available at kickoff.
- Admission is just $5 for ages 13-and-up and just $2 for youth, ages 3-12. IUPUI students are admitted for FREE with a valid Crimson Card and parking is FREE during home events in lots 59, 63, 80 and 86.
- There's no broadcast information for Sunday's match at SIU, but live stats will be available at kickoff.
THE SERIES
- IUPUI is 10-9 all-time against Western Illinois and has won three straight in the series. The last meeting was a 2-0 IUPUI win in Indianapolis on Oct. 23, 2016 as Tori Minnich scored the game-winner in the 52nd minute and assisted on a Maryna Clark tally in the 73rd minute.
- Sunday's matchup with Southern Illinois is the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
JAG SCRATCHES
- IUPUI is 1-1 on the young season with a 1-0 overtime win over Toledo in the opener, followed by a 4-1 loss at Butler.
- IUPUI went 6-10-3 last season with a 3-5-1 mark in Horizon League play.
- The Jaguars were recently picked to finish fourth in the Horizon League preseason polls
- Senior goalkeeper Sophia Lipka registered her 18th career shutout in the season opening win over Toledo, putting her three shy of tying IUPUI Hall of Famer Jamie Farrell's all-time record of 21.
- Junior Valentine Pursey tallied her 18th career goal at Butler last Sunday, moving her into a tie for seventh on the program's all-time list. She's five goals away from moving into a tie for sixth on the program's all-time list.
- Pursey and freshman Maya Lacognato have accounted for the team's two goals this season while junior Josie Denton and freshman Maya Turner have assists this season. Lacognato tallied the game-winner in overtime in her collegiate debut against Toledo in the game's 100th minute.
- Junior defender Natalie McNally has yet to step off the field this season, logging all 190 minutes thus far.
- The Jags return their top four scorers from a season ago in Elizabeth Bueckers (14 pts), Miranda Ricks (11), Pursey (10) and Emma Chambers (8).
- Lipka was the 2017 Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year and is on pace to break the program's all-time record in shutouts.
- IUPUI returns 10 of 11 starters from last season, including the quintet of Lipka, Pursey, Chambers, Natalie McNally and Jenna Sterr, who started all 19 matches a season ago.
- Head coach Chris Johnson, the program's all-time leader in wins (115), enters his 17th season on the Jaguars' sidelines and has taken IUPUI to two NCAA Tournaments (2009 & 2017)
SCOUTING WESTERN ILLINOIS
- Western Illinois is 1-0 to start the season, having defeated Missouri State in the season opener, 2-1.
- Bridget Schuler tallied WIU's game-winner and Amy Andrews also scored in the victory. Cassidy Grunewald and Natalie Nagle added assists in the victory.
- In goal, Ines Palmeiro Herrera earned the win, recording a pair of saves in 90 minutes of work.
- Dr. Eric Johnson is in his fifth season piloting the women's program and has amassed a 10-40-2 record. Johnson also oversees WIU's men's soccer program.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
- Southern Illinois is 2-1 to start the season and will play Belmont before taking on the Jaguars on Sunday. The Salukis have defeated Illinois-Springfield and Rose Hulman, while having dropped a home decision to North Alabama.
- Emma Spotak leads the SIU attack with two goals in three games while Kathryn Creedon has a goal and an assist. Madison Bennion has SIU's other goal this season. The Salukis have outshot foes by a 45-24 margin and 23-14 edge in shots on goal.
- In goal, Dariana Mihalache has started all three matches and registered a 0.67 goals against average and seven saves. Three other SIU keepers have come on in relief this season as the quartet has combined on a 1.00 GAA and 11 stops in three matches.
- SIU is coached by Grant Williams, who was top assistant at Evansville before taking on the SIU program.
