YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The IUPUI women's track and field team registered three new school records and five individual personal bests on a cold, rainy second day of the 2019 Horizon League Outdoor Championships on Saturday (May 4). In addition, three individuals punched tickets to the finals in their respective events, making for an exciting upcoming Sunday forthcoming.
The high jump and pole vault were moved indoors due to rain and both IUPUI competitors took advantage with solid performances. Sophomore
Lana Pham matched her personal best by clearing 1.55m (5' 1'') to tie for ninth overall in the event. Later, freshman
Kelly Zehnder reset her own school record in the pole vault, clearing 3.55m (11' 7.75'') to close her rookie season with a sixth-place finish. Meanwhile at the track and field complex, freshman
Hallie Mockobee earned a spot in the finals of the long jump, ultimately jumping 5.19m (17' 0.5'') to place eighth overall to contribute to the Jaguars' point total.
On the track, freshman
Lauren Palmer performed the 100 and 200m double, just missing a PR in the former with a time of 12.83. She followed by lowering her own school record in the 200 at 26.45. Junior
Rachel Saylor also doubled, running the 200 and 400m events, clocking season-best efforts in both. She ran 1:02.80 in the 400 before turning around and spinning a time of 27.92 in the 200 as a light drizzle continued to fall.
Four seniors competed in the 800m event with two earning spots in Sunday's finals. With only the winner of each of the four heats guaranteed a spot in the finals, senior
Amairany Cruz started the waiting game by finishing second in her race in a time of 2:14.95.
Maggie Shields followed by running a personal best time of 2:15.63 in her race, but also had to play the waiting game.
Allie Wright and
Megan Zajac were among the entries in the final heat and Wright spun an impressive 2:13.08 while glancing at the video board on the homestretch to ensure her time would stand. After it was all said and done, Cruz earned the eighth and final spot in the finals, while Shields was left out at ninth overall.
Later, freshman
Marie Terry was impressive in the 400m hurdles, clocking a confident time of 1:06.38 to lower her own school record and collect an automatic spot in the finals.
Youngstown State is tops among the team standings with 134 points, more than doubling second-place Milwaukee. The Jags have just four points after nine scored events, but will assuredly add to that total on Sunday with two finalists in both the 800 and 1,500m events and another in the 400m hurdles. In addition, Mockobee and Zehnder will compete in the triple jump and the Jags will cap the meet with the 4x400 relay.
The Jaguars will begin day three of the league championships on Sunday (May 5) at 10:00 a.m. at Youngstown State's Farmers National Bank Field.
