DENMARK, Wis. – IUPUI was swept by Green Bay in the first two games of its series against the Phoenix in two very different games on Tuesday (April 9).
The first game of the series saw IUPUI'S
Lexi Lucas throwing a no-hitter through four innings before losing the lead while game two featured 27 runs between the two squads.
GREEN BAY 7 – IUPUI 1
In the top of the fourth, IUPUI brought home the first run of the game.
Delaney Thompson began the inning with a double to the fence in right center field. Two batters later, Speth singled to right field. The throw home from right skipped by the catcher far enough that Thompson was able to get home to score the first run of the game.
Lucas was perfect through four innings, befuddling the Phoenix batters and working extremely efficiently. Things changed for the freshman pitcher in the bottom of the fifth. The first batter of the inning drove a deep home run to left to tie up the game. Green Bay kept the offense going with a double to left and another double to left gave the Phoenix a one-run lead. After a lineout to
Emily Berrisford at short, another blast to left center field brought home two more runs and chased Lucas from the game.
Amanda Melzoni relieved Lucas and got out of the inning without giving up any more runs.
In the top of the sixth, back-to-back two out walks put a runner in scoring position but a strikeout ended any threat the Jags were showing.
The Phoenix took advantage of an error by
Haley Ginger at third base to start a rally in the sixth. After two groundouts, a single up the middle brought home the first run of the inning. A double was followed by a two-RBI single as Green Bay pushed its lead to 7-1.
IUPUI needed a big rally in the seventh to get back in the game and started with a double by
Delainey Turner.
McKenzie Loge singled to right but Turner was thrown out at home. Ginger reached on an error but that was followed by a popup from Thompson. After both runners moved up 60 feet,
Mandy Dallas lined out to short to end the game.
GREEN BAY 14, IUPUI 13
Thompson's two-run home run in the top of the seventh gave the Jags a two-run lead and put IUPUI in position to pick up a win but Green Bay made a comeback to steal the win in game two. Thompson had a career-day at the plate in game two, going a perfect 4-for-4 and drawing a walk. Thompson also scored a career-high five runs while driving in three. It was the most runs
In what was a back-and-forth game the whole way, Thompson stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh after Ginger has singled to center field to keep the inning going after the first two batters of the inning were retired. Thompson got ahold a pitch and hit a no-doubt home run to put the Jags on top.
With Lucas on the mound, IUPUI was three-outs away from splitting Friday's double header but back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt put the tying run on second base. After an intentional walk to load the bases, a sacrifice fly put Green Bay one run closer. In the next at bat, a single fell in front of center fielder
Jaida Speth, bringing home the tying run. The next batter hit a flare down the left field line that fell in between Ginger, Berrisford and Thompson, scoring the walk-off run.
The run-fest began in the top of the first as IUPUI struck for five runs. It began quickly as Loge doubled to the fence in right center to lead off the game. Ginger singled to move Loge to third and then stole second. Loge scored on Thompson's single and Thompson moved to second on thrown as the Jags took the lead.
After two outs,
Sabrina Trevino doubled to bring home two runs and scored on an error by the centerfielder on
Morgan Schuetter's fly ball. A walk and another error, this one at second base, brought up Loge as the Jags batted around. Loge was able to draw a walk to bring home IUPUI's fifth run of the inning.
Green Bay responded with a three-run home run on the bottom of the inning but IUPUI struck back in the second. Thompson walked to begin the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dallas. Speth stepped to the plate and doubled to the fence in center to score Thompson and Trevino walked in the next at bat. Schuetter grounded to short but a throwing error on the second baseman trying to turn two, allowed Speth to come home for IUPUI's seventh run of the game.
In the third, the offense came alive again for Green Bay with a two-run double cutting IUPUI's lead in half. The very next batter homered, tying the game and chasing starter
Dezirae Leonard from the game. Melzoni was able to get out of the inning with two ground outs.
The Jags responded to Green Bay's rally with a run of their own, starting off strong in the fourth. Thompson singled to left and was moved to third on a double by Dallas. Speth hit a ground ball to second and Green Bay surrendered the run for an out as IUPUI took the lead again.
Melzoni had things under control in the circle for the next two innings and IUPUI gave Melzoni some insurance in the top of the sixth. Thompson led off the inning with a double and Dallas reached on a wild pitch after swinging at a third strike. After a flyout, Thompson and Dallas moved up 60 feet after stolen bases bringing up Trevino. Trevino put a drive in one that easily cleared the fence for a three run home run and put the Jags up 11-7. It was Trevino's second home run of the season and gave her a career-high five RBI for the game.
Three-straight singles by the Phoenix, coupled with a wild pitch and stolen base brought home two runs for Green Bay, again cutting the lead in half. Another single put a runner in scoring position and a double to right field cut IUPUI's lead to one. Lucas then replaced Melzoni to try and hold on to the one-run lead. The next batter hit a hard line drive down the third base line. Ginger got a glove on the ball to stop it from going in to the outfield but the ball got far enough way that the runner from third tried to score. Ginger's throw looked to beat the runner to the plate but it was ruled that the runner was able to slide under Trevino's tag to tie the game. Lucas was able to get out of the inning with no more damage done, setting up the seventh inning.
