CLEVELAND – IUPUI softball was led by four RBI from
Sabrina Trevino as the Jags beat Cleveland State 10-6 in the second game of a double header on Saturday (April 20). The Jags split the double header with the Vikings after falling 1-0 in game one.
IUPUI 10 – Cleveland State 6
After being shutout to begin the day, IUPUI's offense woke up with 10 runs on 13 hits and hung on to a 10-6 win over the Vikings to split the double header.
Four Jaguars finished with at least two hits, led by
Mandy Dallas, who finished 4-for-4 on the day.
McKenzie Loge,
Sabrina Trevino and
Emily Berrisford all finished with two hits and Loge also drew three walks.
Things began quickly for IUPUI after Loge began the game with a leadoff single and scored on a throwing error after a single by Dallas two batters later. After a fielder's choice, Trevino homered to right field to put the Jags up 3-0.
Cleveland State got a run back in the bottom of the inning but IUPUI struck back in the third with Loge doubling to begin the frame and Dallas scoring Loge on a double of her own. Two batters later, Trevino stepped to the plate with Dallas on third and singled to right to bring home IUPUI's fifth run of the game.
In the fifth, singles by Dallas and
Jaida Speth and a Trevino walk loaded the bases. With
Morgan Schuetter up, a wild pitch was compounded by an error by Cleveland State's pitcher, allowing two runs to score and the Jags to take a 7-1 lead.
Loge scored IUPUI's eighth run in the sixth after a double by
Delaney Thompson and single from Dallas. A groundout by Speth scored Thompson and Trevino hit a sacrifice fly to score Dallas and put the Jags up 10-1.
After throwing five innings, allowing just one unearned run on five hits,
Dezirae Leonard allowed the first five Vikings of the sixth inning to reach and two runs to score. A flyout resulted in the first out of the inning but also another run coming across the plate. Two batters later, a single made the score 10-5.
Looking to lock down the game in the seventh, Leonard allowed a double with one out and after getting a pop up, another single scored the sixth run of the game for Cleveland State. After a walk, Leonard was able to close out the game for the Jags with a groundout.
Cleveland State 1 – IUPUI 0
In the first game of the day, IUPUI's offense was shut down as the Jaguars managed just three base runners and never got a runner in to scoring position in a 1-0 loss.
Speth reached on an error in the second, but was caught stealing. Dallas singled in the fourth with two outs but was stranded on first.
Haley Ginger was the last Jaguar to reach base, drawing a walk in the seventh but never advanced past first.
The lack of offense wasted a strong outing by starter
Lexi Lucas who only gave up one run on three hits and only walked two batters while striking out five Vikings.
Lucas got out of a jam in the second inning with runners on second and third with one out with a strikeout and fly out to end the inning.
From there, Lucas retired the next ten batters until a solo home run to center field gave the Vikings the only run of the game.
