CLEVELAND – IUPUI women's tennis plays its final weekend of the regular season needing two wins for a chance to make the Horizon League Tournament.
IUPUI begins play this weekend with a match on Friday (April 19) at 4 p.m. at Cleveland State and will finish up the regular season at Youngstown State on Saturday (April 20), with the match against the Penguins beginning at 5 p.m.
The Jags begin the weekend one game back of Northern Kentucky for the sixth and final spot in the women's Horizon League Tournament. IUPUI will need to win both matches this weekend and need help as Northern Kentucky will need to lose both matches as the Norse hold the tie break after beating the Jaguars earlier this season.
IUPUI is currently tied with Detroit Mercy with a 2-5 conference record but the Jags beat the Titans in Indianapolis to hold the tie breaker.
The Jags are coming off of a 4-3 win against Green Bay in their last match. IUPUI earned the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 and senior
Mariella Pessina, playing in her final home match of her career, closed out the win for IUPUI with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 3 singles match.
SCOUTING REPORT
CLEVELAND STATE
Cleveland State enters the match with the Jags sitting at a perfect 7-0 in conference play and have won nine-straight matches. The Vikings are over .500 in every spot in singles play. Isabella Spindler is 11-1 in the No. 1 spot and combined, Cleveland State is 19-2 in the No. 6 spot with Kateryna Avram at 13-2.
In doubles play, the duo of Sian Payne and Gaby Schoenberg are a perfect 6-0 in No. 3 doubles matches in conference play.
IUPUI has lost three-straight against Cleveland State, including a 2-5 loss last season in Indianapolis.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE
The Penguins sit at 1-6 in league play and will play UIC before taking on the Jags. Youngstown State won its first match of the conference play against Green Bay but has since lost six-straight.
The No. 6 spot is the best spot for the Penguins with a 10-12 record on the season. Lucia Zagar holds the best record in conference play for any singles competitor with a 4-1 record in No. 6 matches.
In doubles play, Imaan Hassim and Tamara Teufl hold a perfect 3-0 record with all three wins coming in the No. 1 spot.
