INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI's bats were silenced by UIC as the Flames swept the Jags in a double header on Wednesday (April 17) to sweep a three-game series. The Jags managed just six total hits in the two games.
The Jags (14-32, 8-8 Horizon) struggled in the circle, allowing seven runs in the first game and 11 in the second. UIC hit five total home runs on the day with three coming in game one and two more in the second game.
UIC 7 – IUPUI 0
IUPUI starter
Lexi Lucas and UIC starter Jennah Speth were in control in the circle with both pitchers throwing three shutout innings to start the contest.
UIC struck first in the top of the fourth. After a lead-off single, the Flames took Lucas deep for a two-run shot to left center to get on the board.
In the bottom of the inning,
Delaney Thompson singled with one out and after a fielding error by UIC in
Mandy Dallas's at bat, Thompson moved to second. With a runner in scoring position,
Sabrina Trevino struck out looking and
Jaida Speth grounded out to end the inning.
After a 1-2-3 inning for both teams in the fifth, UIC hit a lead-off double and another home run down the left field line to double their lead.
Another home run in the top of the seventh by the Flames, this one a three-run shot, made the score 7-0.
The Jags only managed to get a runner on base in two innings, going down in order in the final three frames.
UIC 11 – IUPUI 0 F/6
The Jags managed to double their hit output in game two,
McKenzie Loge finished the game 2-for-3, but IUPUI only tallied four hits, with the others coming from Dallas and Speth.
The second batter of the game for UIC reached on a single and stole second. After a flyout to right, the runner tagged and Loge's throw hit the runner and bounced away from
Amber Pagan, allowing the first run of the game to come across the plate.
Both teams earned a walk in the second but nothing came of it as the score remained 1-0 after two.
In the third, a single and another stolen base put a runner in scoring position for UIC. A flyout to right moved the runner to third. During the next at bat, a wild pitch from
Dezirae Leonard scored the second run of the game for UIC.
UIC took control of the game in the fourth after loading the bases with only one out. An infield fly put the second out on the board but Leonard walked in UIC's third run of the game. In the next at bat, a double over Thompson's head in left scored two and the Flames took a 5-0 lead.
In the sixth, UIC put the game out of reach with two three-run home runs in the inning and led 11-0 going in to the bottom of the sixth.
IUPUI's most offense of the game came in the bottom of the frame as Loge doubled to left to start the inning. Ginger was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for the Jags. The Jags attempt at a comeback took a serious hit in a weird play as Thompson grounded to short. The shortstop stepped on second for the first out and Ginger was called for interference after the throw to first hit Ginger in the helmet. The interference meant Loge was also out and the Jags were left with Thompson on at first and two outs in the inning.
Dallas came to the plate and singled and another single by Speth loaded the bases.
Maddie Keeley came in to hit for IUPUI but Keeley hit a grounder to second that ended the game in the sixth.
