INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI capped the regular season in style with a 76-55 win over Milwaukee on Saturday (Mar. 2). The win means that the Jaguars will host Northern Kentucky in a Horizon League Quarterfinal on Tuesday (Mar. 5) at 7 p.m.
After the Jags honored its senior class, IUPUI was led by senior
Tamya Sims who finished with 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Fellow seniors
Sydney Hall and
Allex Brown also had strong games in their last regular season appearances in the Jungle. Hall finished with 11 points, hitting three threes and Brown finished with six rebounds to go along with two points.
In total, five Jags finished in double-figures with
Holly Hoopingarner scoring 15 and
Macee Williams and
Katelyn O'Reilly both scoring 11. Williams led the Jags with 10 rebounds to collect her 11
th double-double of the year.
Bouncing back from a tough shooting afternoon against Green Bay, IUPUI finished the game shooting 49.1 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from the three point line, the highest percentage from beyond the arc for the Jags this season. The Jags were also a solid 14-for-17 (82.4 percent) from the free throw line, the best percentage when attempting double-figure free throws since going 27-of-30 against Oakland on Jan. 13.
"I thought the ladies came back and really did a nice job with their energy level," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "Tonight we made shots and against Green Bay we didn't. It was nice to see the ball go through the hoop."
The game really turned in IUPUI's favor as the Jags went on a 20-3 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters, ultimately capped by a Williams three-point play to put the Jags up 66-45. After the Jags had taken a nine-point lead on a three by Hall, Milwaukee scored five-straight to pull within four. Sims responded with a layup, two free throws and another layup to push the lead to 10 and Hoopingarner hit a three that forced a Milwaukee timeout.
The Panthers hit a layup out of the timeout but
Morgan Allen scored four-straight points and the Jags led by 15 after three quarters. Williams began the fourth with a layup and O'Reilly answered a Milwaukee free throw with a three to put IUPUI up 63-45. IUPUI maintained the comfortable lead, pushing it to as much as 24 after a basket by Brown and cruised to the win.
The Jags crushed Milwaukee on the glass, outrebounding the Panthers 41-21 and won the points in the paint battle 28-16. IUPUI also took care of the ball well after a 26-turnover performance against Green Bay, losing the ball just 12 times.
Milwaukee jumped out early, scoring the first six points before IUPUI went on a 7-0 run. The first quarter went back and forth until the Jags scored five-straight, with
Agatha Beier hitting a three, to lead 16-10 after the first ten minutes.
IUPUI continued to inch its lead up, hitting a ten-point lead midway through the second after a three by Hall. A three by Williams put the Jags up by 11 and a layup by the sophomore gave IUPUI its largest first half lead of 14 points with 38 seconds left.
The Jags held Milwaukee at bay in the third until the run by the Panthers that was answered by IUPUI to put the game out of reach.
IUPUI enters the Horizon League Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 Northern Kentucky on Tuesday (Mar. 5) in the Jungle at 7 p.m. For tickets, contact
