ROSEMONT, Ill. – IUPUI softball was done in by big innings as the Jaguars dropped both contests on Saturday (Feb. 9) as play continued at the Total Control Sports Invitational.
UMKC 12 – IUPUI 5
In the first game of the day, a late explosion by UMKC ended the chance for IUPUI's first win of the season. The Jags got on the board first as
Sabrina Trevino doubled home
Delainey Turner in the bottom of the second.
The Roos put up their first crooked number of the game in top of the third on a three run home run but the Jags responded with two runs in the fourth to tie the game. IUPUI loaded the bases after a
Kristin London walk, single by Turner and walk by Trevino. The first run came in on a walk drawn by
McKenzie Loge and a groundout by Jada Speth brought home Turner for the second time.
A double and a sacrifice fly put UMKC back up in the fifth but the Jags kept fighting, taking advantage of a Roos' error in the bottom of the frame.
Haley Ginger reached on the error and got in to scoring position with a stolen base. Ginger was brought home by a London triple and London scored on a single by Turner to put the Jags up one.
The game turned in the sixth after the first two batters reached and a sac fly brought home the first run of the inning for UMKC. After the Jags picked up the second out of the inning, a two run home run made the game 7-5. Things got worse in the seventh as UMKC loaded the bases with no outs and scored four runs before the second out of the inning was made.
Turner finished 3-for-3 on the game and tied London for the team lead with two runs scored.
WESTERN ILLINOIS 8 – IUPUI 4
The Jags second game saw them rudely greeted by Western Illinois, as the Leathernecks scored three in the top of the first. After a single and pop-up, the first run of the game scored on a triple to right center. IUPUI's starter Speth got a strike out for the second out but gave up a run scoring double and single to push the lead to 3-0.
IUPUI bounced back in the bottom of the frame as Turner continued her hot day with double to lead off the inning.
Mandy Dallas singled to move Turner to third and then Dallas moved to second on a stolen base. Trevino's single brought home Turner and
Taytum Schaney, who ran for Trevino, stole second.
Maddie Keeley reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Dallas to cut the lead to one.
During the next at bat, Keeley was thrown out at second trying to steal but that allowed Schaney to come home to the game.
That tied game did not last long as Western Illinois led the third off with a single that was driving home by a double and later in the inning a two-out three-run home run put a four-spot on the scoreboard that the Jaguars were not able to overcome.
The Jags only managed to get one more run on the board, a solo home run by Trevino, her first of the season.
Both Trevino and Dallas finished with two hits in the game against the Leathernecks.
IUPUI finishes up play at the Total Control Sports Invitational with a game against Loyola Chicago at 2 p.m.
