ROSEMONT, Ill – IUPUI softball was bitten again by a big inning in a 6-0 loss to Loyola Chicago to close out play in the Total Control Sports Invitational on Sunday (Feb. 10).
The game remained scoreless until Loyola broke through in the bottom of the third. After a one-out single and stole base, an infield single brought home the first run of the game. After a hit batter, another run scored on the third single of the inning.
The big blow was struck in the bottom of the fourth after the Ramblers started the inning with back-to-back doubles.
Lexi Lucas got the next batter to strike out but the runner reached first after a wild pitch to load the bases. After another strikeout, a two-run double to left center doubled the Loyola lead. Two batters later, a two-out double pushed the lead to six.
IUPUI struggled early on offense, only colleting one hit in the first four innings and finishing with five for the game. The Jags biggest chance came in the top of the third as the game was still scoreless after a walk, an error and a two-out walk loaded the bases but
Mandy Dallas grounded out to first to end the inning.
After the third, the Jags got one more runner to third after
Kristin London singled with two outs and was moved to third on a single by
McKenzie Loge but
Maddie Keeley grounded out to end the threat.
The Jags will continue non-conference tournament play as they head to Statesboro, Ga., to compete in the Eagle Round Robin hosted by Georgia Southern, Friday (Feb. 15) through Sunday (Feb. 17).
