STATESBORO, Ga. – IUPUI looked poised to earn its first win of the season but big innings bit the Jags as IUPUI fell in both games to open play at the Eagle Round Robin hosted by Georgia Southern.
UMKC 10 – IUPUI 0
IUPUI was shutout for the second time this season and was bitten by another big inning in the first game of the Eagle Round Robin against UMKC. The Roos jumped on the Jaguars early scoring six runs in the top of the second on five-straight run-scoring singles, all with two outs. A home run in the top of the third pushed the lead to 7-0 and UMKC scored its last three runs in the top of the fifth, again all with two outs.
IUPUI could not get any offense going against the Roos, managing just four hits. The biggest threat of the game for the Jags came in the bottom of the fourth when IUPUI managed to load the bases with two outs.
Sabrina Trevino walked and
Maddie Keeley reached on an error. After
Emily Berrisford singled to load the bases, the threat was ended as
Delainey Turner grounded out.
Haley Ginger had the most success at the plate for the Jags going 2-for-3 with a double but IUPUI left seven runners on base in the loss.
Georgia Southern 8 – IUPUI 3
The Jags trailed Georgia Southern 1-0 heading in to the sixth inning but IUPUI found its bats after a one-out single from
Kristin London. Three pitches later,
Delainey Turner hit a triple to drive in London to tie the game. After a walk by Jada Speth and a ground out, Speth stole second to get two in to scoring position.
McKenzie Loge delivered the big hit with a double to score both runners and put the Jags up 3-1.
IUPUI starter
Lexi Lucas was having her best start to date, holding the Eagles to just one hit through five innings until Lucas was met by a leadoff home run in the sixth to cut the Jags lead to one. After picking up two outs, the third one proved elusive. After a four-pitch walk, Georgia Southern's bats got to Lucas with another home run that made the game 4-3. Back-to-back singles and a three-run home run later, IUPUI found itself down 6-3 and Lucas was replaced by
Dezirae Leonard.
Leonard was rudely greeted by a triple and another two-run shot that put the Eagles up 8-3.
Emily Berrisford, Loge and
Sabrina Trevino all finished the game with two hits but the Jags left eight runners on base including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
