JAGS BEAT ELON, 59-53, TO WIN LADY REBEL ROUNDUP

Holly Hoopingarner was named MVP of the tournament after scoring 19 to lead the way against the Phoenix.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – IUPUI won the 2019 Lady Rebels Roundup with a 59-53 win over Elon on Sunday (Dec. 1). The Jags were led by senior Holly Hoopingarner, who scored a season-high 19 points.

IUPUI (4-3) held a 15-point halftime lead but the lead disappeared during an awful third quarter as Elon tied the game at 43 going in to the final ten minutes. During the third quarter, IUPUI managed just seven points, being outscored 22-7. The Jags hit just one field goal, a three by Hoopingarner with 1:26 left in the third. IUPUI's other four points in the quarter came from the free throw line.

To start the final period, the teams went back-and-forth with Elon taking a 47-46 lead with just over seven minutes left to play. IUPUI finally got the lead back on two free throws by Macee Williams at the 5:16 mark and back-to-back threes by Katelyn O'Reilly and Hoopingarner pushed the Jags lead to seven and IUPUI seemed in control.

O'Reilly hit a layup with three minutes left on the clock, increasing the Jags lead back to seven after the Phoenix hit a basket but the Jags did not hit a field goal the rest of the game as Elon crept back in to the contest. Two jumpers by the Phoenix cut IUPUI's lead to 56-53 and a missed Jaguar jumper gave the ball back to Elon with the chance to tie. Elon's jumper was off the mark, IUPUI got the rebound and the Jags hit three free throws to ice the game.

"Really happy for our young ladies to come out here to Vegas and come away with the tournament championship," said head coach Austin Parkinson. "Holly was outstanding and stepped up as a senior when Elon started to make a comeback. It was fun to see everyone make contributions on the this trip."

Hoopingarner scored in double-figures for the fifth time this season, hitting 7-of-12 shots from the field and going 4-for-7 from deep, the only Jaguar to hit more than one three in the game. The senior was joined by O'Reilly in double-figures as O'Reilly scored 11 for her first game with at least 10 points.

After shooting over 48 percent from the floor against St. John's and 43 percent from three, IUPUI cooled off against the Phoenix. The Jags were just 35 percent overall and 29 percent from deep, the second-worst shooting game on the young season for IUPUI.

Both Williams and Natalie Andersen had their double-digit scoring streaks come to an end as Williams finished with eight points and Andersen scored three. Williams was 1-for-7 from the floor but did go 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

IUPUI jumped on Elon, scoring the first six points of the game and went up 9-2 after a Morgan Allen layup with just under five minutes in the first quarter. After Elon cut the lead to four, Destiny Perkins hit a three to five the Jags a 17-10 lead after one quarter of play.

Williams scored the Jags first four points of the second quarter as IUPUI pushed the lead to nine and a three by Hoopingarner increased the advantage to 12. Elon cut the lead to eight with 3:48 left in the half, but the Jaguar defense held the Phoenix scoreless for the rest of the half as IUPUI went on a run. Rachel McLimore hit a layup and a three, followed by a Hoopingarner layup to put IUPUI up 15 heading in to halftime.
