JAGUARS TO HOST WRIGHT STATE IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

IUPUI (4-9-3, 2-4-1 HL) to host the Raiders (7-8-2, 3-4 HL) on Friday night (Nov. 8)

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team will close the 2019 regular season on Friday night (Nov. 8) when the Jaguars host Wright State (7-8-2, 3-4 HL) in a pivotal league showdown. Both IUPUI and the Raiders come in seeking a win in an effort to cement spots in the upcoming six-team Horizon League Tournament. Wright State is currently tied for the No. 5 spot in the standings with nine points at 3-4 in league play while IUPUI is No. 8 in the standings with seven points at 2-4-1. Only the top three seeds - No. 1 UIC, No. 2 Oakland and No. 3 Green Bay - have been decided as the three remaining berths will be decided on Friday. 

MATCH INFO 
  • Friday's match will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. The game will be aired on ESPN+ as Jonathan Matthes (pxp) will be on the call and live stats will be available at kickoff.
  •  Admission is just $5 for ages 13-and-up and just $2 for youth, ages 3-12. IUPUI students are admitted for FREE with a valid Crimson Card and parking is FREE during home events in lots 59, 63, 80 and 86. 
THE SERIES
  • IUPUI is just 3-16 all-time against Wright State and has lost the last six meetings in the series. Wright State won last year's meeting by a 1-0 score in Dayton on Oct. 20, 2018. 
  • IUPUI's most recent win was a 2-1 decision in Indianapolis on Oct. 26, 2010. 
  • IUPUI is 3-6 in the nine meetings in Indianapolis, having collected wins in 2000, 2004 and 2010. 
  • Four of the meetings have gone to overtime with the Jags going 1-3 in those matchups. 
JAG SCRATCHES
  • IUPUI enters play at 4-9-3 on the season and 2-4-1 in Horizon League play. The Jags are 3-4-2 on their home turf this season. 
  • IUPUI is 1-2-2 in five overtime games this season with a win over Green Bay (2-1) and losses at Houston Baptist (2-1) and most recently at Detroit Mercy (1-0). 
  • Seniors Alan Aguilar and Yan Souza are tied for the team lead with four goals each while junior back Gianni Catenacci has a team-high four assists, despite missing significant time this season due to injury. Souza has a team-high 10 points (4 goals, 2 assists) and Aguilar is next with nine (4 goals, 1 assist). Junior defender Tommy Patacca is the only other IUPUI player with multiple goals, having scored twice this season. 
  • IUPUI has gone to overtime in each of their past two games, dropping a 1-0 double overtime affair at Detroit Mercy last weekend after playing Western Illinois to a 2-2 draw in non-conference action on Nov. 30. 
  • Senior midfielder Pedro Valladao was named one of 30 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award on Sept. 23. He was one of just two selections from the Horizon League and was the lone selection from the Division I schools in the state of Indiana. Even though Valladao was not selected among the 10 national finalists, as announced on Oct. 11, he received another award on Nov. 7 when he was named first team CoSIDA Academic All-District 5, becoming the third player in IUPUI history to earn multiple first team ballots.
  • The Jags recently ripped off an impressive 1-0 victory over Cincinnati as sophomore goalkeeper Quinn McCallion dialed up his second shutout of the year and junior Cameron Petersen netted his first career goal in the game's 50th minute on a free kick. The Jags came in severely undermanned as junior Tommy Patacca sat out after accumulating his fifth yellow card of the season a game prior and two other starters were missing due to injuries. The win snapped IUPUI's four-game losing streak to the Bearcats. 
  • In goal, McCallion has played all 1527 minutes this season, registering a 1.59 goals against average and 75 saves with a .735 save percentage.  
  • Since opening Horizon League play 2-0-1, the Jags have dropped four straight by a combined 14-1 score. 
  • Senior midfielder Yan Souza was named the Horizon League's Offensive Player of the Week after tallying the game-winner in the Jags' 2-1 win at Northern Kentucky in the game's 89th minute. Souza took a feed from Alan Aguilar and drove a shot off an NKU defender and into the open net. Cincinnati-native Chris Workman also scored his first career goal in that game as he was playing just minutes from his hometown.
  • The Jaguars win at NKU was IUPUI's first regular season road win since September 2014 and first regular season league road win since October 2012. 
  • IUPUI launched year three of the Jaguars' 'Real Men Read' program earlier this fall, having worked with seven IPS Schools, spanning 16 fourth grade classrooms. 
  • Aguilar fueled the Jaguars' 2-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne, tallying goals in the 61st and 64th minutes. The winner came off assists from Gianni Catenacci and Fernando Borges and he added insurance just more than three minutes later by converting the fourth penalty kick of his career. 
  • Souza has a team-high four goals while Catenacci has a team-high four assists. Aguilar is second on the team with three goals scored and both Kirezi Freddy and Valladao have two assists each. 
  • Junior back Tommy Patacca leads the team with 1,354 minutes played and Corey Goede is next in line with 1,316 minutes. Only five field players - Yan Souza, Riley Shives, Pedro Valladao, Landon Malott and Ethan Diedel - have appeared in all 16 matches so far this season. 
  • IUPUI went 5-10-4 last season and 4-3-1 in Horizon League play, earning a spot in the league's postseason tournament. The Jags then won the program's first postseason match since 2007 by upsetting Green Bay in the opening round. IUPUI later took eventual league champion UIC to penalty kicks in the semifinals round. 
  • The Jaguars were picked to finish seventh in the Horizon League, according to the league's preseason polls.  
  • IUPUI returns its top two scorers from a season ago in senior midfielder Alan Aguilar (11 points) and sophomore back Corey Goede (eight points). In addition, McCallion (1.22 GAA) returns in net and five other starters - Tommy PataccaCameron PetersenAnthony Saporito, Shives and Pedro Valladao - all return. 
  • All total, IUPUI returns 14 of the team's 17 goals from a season ago. 
  • Head coach Brian Barnett is in his fourth season on the Jaguars' sidelines. 
SCOUTING WSU
  • Wright State is 7-8-2 on the season and 3-4 in Horizon League play. After scoring at least one goal in each of the season's first 15 contests, the Raiders have been blanked in each of their most recent two contests in 1-0 losses to Green Bay and Bowling Green. The Raiders are 4-4-1 on the road this season with road victories at Memphis (4-2), Saint Francis (1-0), Milwaukee (4-1) and Cleveland State (2-1), along with a road draw at Duke (2-2) on Oct. 1. 
  • Wright State has been outscored 33-31 on the season with the offense being paced by Stefan Rokvic (8 goals), Deri Corfe (7 goals, 6 assists) and Jackson Dietrich (4 goals, 5 assists). Corfe has scored four game-winners and fired 76 shots on the year, averaging nearly five attempts per game. 
  • Joel Sundell has played 15 of the team's 17 matches in goal, registering a 1.54 goals against average and 69 stops in 1340 minutes of action. He's collected a pair of shutouts overall and recorded a 1.67 GAA in seven league games.

UP NEXT
