CAREER NIGHTS HELP IUPUI END SKID WITH FIVE SET WIN OVER YOUNGSTOWN STATE

The Jaguars snapped a ten-match losing streak as three Jags set career-highs.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – IUPUI got career matches from Allie Pogue and Haley Hoffman as the Jaguars snapped a 10-match skid with a five set win over Youngstown State on Wednesday (Nov. 6). The Jags overcame a 2-1 match deficit to beat the Penguins.

Pogue finished with a career-high 19 kills, notching double-digit kills for the third-straight match, to lead all players and hit .200 on the match. Hoffman finished the match with a .519 hitting percentage while tallying a career-high 16 kills. Rebecca Schlechte also posted a career-high, dishing out 52 assists in the match.

"We started off pretty sluggish so it was great to see us battle and put things together to win those last two sets," said head coach Lindsey Froehlich. "Haley [Hoffman] was a big spark for our offense. She came in to the match with an intention of being more offensive and it showed."

The teams traded points until the final set was tied at four. From there, IUPUI got kills by Pogue and Kaitlyn Johnson as well as a block by the duo of Johnson and Maddie Dean as the Jags went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead. After the Penguins scored a point to make it 10-6, Johnson added another kill and teamed with Hoffman for another block to put the Jags two points away from the win. Hoffman got a kill to give the Jags match point at 14-7 and after two points by Youngstown State, Pogue finished off the match with a kill.

Johnson finished the match with 10 kills and Dean added seven as the Jags hit .247 as a team. It was the second-highest hitting percentage of the season for IUPUI, just behind a .251 hitting clip that IUPUI had in the second match of the season. It was also just the fourth time IUPUI had hit at least .200 all season.

Down 2-1 in the match, IUPUI came out strong as the Jags looked to force a deciding set. IUPUI started the fourth with a 9-1 run capped off by an ace by Alison Cook. Youngstown State responded with six-straight points to pull within two but Hoffman stopped the run with a kill. IUPUI kept the Penguins at bay until a 4-1 run pulled the Penguins within one. A service error and a kill by Pogue pushed the IUPUI lead to 22-19. The teams traded points with Youngstown State fighting off a set point at 24-22. Rhiannon Schuenemann picked up a kill on the next point to push the match to a fifth set.

On defense, IUPUI finished with three players tallying double-digit digs. Schuenemann led the Jags with 23, while Rachel Hickey had 13 and Schlechte had 12. The Jaguars tallied eight blocks with Dean leading the way at five.
