ROCHESTER, Mich. – IUPUI volleyball was swept by Oakland in three sets on Friday night (Nov. 15).
Kaitlyn Johnson led the Jags with 12 kills, reaching double-figure kills for the fifth-straight contest.
IUPUI (7-21, 3-12 Horizon) only managed to hit .118 as a team, while Oakland (15-12, 8-7 Horizon) hit at a .213 clip.
Haley Hoffman led the Jags, hitting .250 and was third on the team with seven kills.
McKayla Wright added eight kills but hit just .115. The Jags finished with 21 hitting errors to 16 for Oakland. Two Golden Grizzlies finished with double-figure kills led by Taylor Dellinger with 13 and Jaime Walling with 12.
In the first set, Hoffman made school history collecting her 29
th solo block on the season, breaking the single-season record set by
Kaitlyn Hickey in 2015. Hoffman helped the Jags earn a 9-4 block advantage over Oakland with the senior collecting five blocks. Both Johnson and
Corrissa Remter finished with three blocks, with Remter earning those three blocks in just one set.
IUPUI started the game strong with a 5-0 run that featured two kills by Johnson and a kill and block by Hoffman but Oakland slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually going up 9-8 after an ace. A 3-0 run by Oakland broke a 10-10 tie and later in the set a 4-0 run by the Golden Grizzlies put the Jags down by six. That would be the closest the Jags would get the rest of the set with Oakland winning set one 25-17.
Down 9-8 in set two, IUPUI started a run with a block by
Maddie Dean and
Allie Pogue. An ace by Dean and kills by Johnson and Dean capped a4-0 run to put the Jags up three. Oakland then scored seven of the next eight points to take charge and had the Jags playing catch up. IUPUI would catch up to the Golden Grizzlies, knotting the score at 19 but that would be the last point the Jags would score as Oakland rattled off six-straight to win the set 25-19.
IUPUI found itself in an early hole in set three, going down by as many as seven with the match on the line. The Jags would battle back, pulling within two at 22-20 until a kill and an error gave Oakland match point. Blocks by the duos of Johnson and Remter and Dean and Hoffman were followed up by a Johnson kill to make the score 24-23 but Walling closed the match out with a kill.
