CLEVELAND – IUPUI volleyball's season came to an end with a hard-fought five-set loss at Cleveland State. Four Jaguars finished with double-figure kills led by
Maddie Dean who tallied 17.
Dean led the way for IUPUI (7-22, 3-13 Horizon), finishing one kill short of tying her career-high.
Haley Hoffman was second on the team with 14 kills, hitting a blistering .400 on the night. Both
McKayla Wright and
Kaitlyn Johnson added 11 kills to finish out their careers in IUPUI uniforms.
The Jags fought back from a 2-1 deficit to force a fifth set with a 25-21 win in set four. The set was a back-and-forth affair until IUPUI took a three point lead after a 4-1 run that featured kills by Hoffman and Remter and an ace by
Rebecca Schlechte. A 4-0 run with two kills by Wright pushed IUPUI's lead to 21-15. The Jags earned set point after a kill by
Allie Pogue and after Cleveland State (8-10, 4-12 Horizon) fought off three set points, Pogue earned another kill to force the deciding set.
IUPUI fell behind 7-1 in the final set but used two kills by Dean and service aces by
Rhiannon Schuenemann and Schlechte to go on a 6-1 run and cut the deficit to two. Four times, IUPUI was able to get back within one point but was never able to tie the set as the Vikings earned match point at 14-11. Hoffman kept the season alive for one more point with a kill by a service error by Schuenemann ended the match for the Jags.
The Jaguar defense finished with a season-high 88 digs as four Jaguars reached double figures. Schuenemann led the Jags with 20 and Wright tallied a double-double with 17 digs.
Rachel Hickey added 15 digs and Schlechte finished the night with 14. At the net IUPUI finished with eight blocks and
Haley Hoffman tallied six, including two solo blocks to push her single-season record to 31.
After falling behind 3-2 in the first set, IUPUI went on a 7-1 run with two kills by Dean, a kill and an ace by Wright and a block by Hoffman to jump ahead 9-4. Kills by Johnson and Dean kept the Vikings at bay any time Cleveland State looked to make a run and IUPUI never let the Vikings get closer than four as Hoffman finished the set with a kill, giving the Jags a 25-18 win.
The Jags hit .308 as a team in the first set but the offense plummeted in the next two sets as IUPUI hit .195 and .064 in the second and third sets, respectively. The struggling offense allowed Cleveland State to earn wins in those two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-21.
