JAGS DOWNED IN FIVE SETS BY YOUNGSTOWN STATE

IUPUI was doomed by 23 team service errors in the loss to the Penguins.

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI volleyball dropped a five-set match to Youngstown State on Wednesday (Oct. 9) after winning the first two sets. The Jags could not overcome a poor service game in the loss to the Penguins.

IUPUI (6-12, 2-3 Horizon) finished the match with nine aces but also committed 23 service errors, the most by an IUPUI team in one match since at least 2001. After committing five errors in each of the first two sets, both wins for IUPUI, the Jaguars committed 13 errors in the last three sets, including nine in the last two sets.

The Jags outhit Youngstown State (7-11, 1-4 Horizon) .183 to .166 as Maddie Dean had a solid match, hitting .317 and tying McKayla Wright for the team lead with 16 kills. Haley Hoffman hit. 300 with six kills, hitting at least .300 in four of the five Horizon League matches this season.

Youngstown State jumped out to an early lead in the first set with a 3-0 run to take a 13-9 lead. The Jags bounced back winning six of the next eight points to tie the set at 15 after a kill by Wright. The teams would go back and forth with the Penguins tying the set at 21 after a kill by Aleah Hughes. A kill by Dean broke the tie and after an error by YSU, back-to-back service aces by Rachel Hickey gave the Jags the set.

Set two was a set of runs with both teams taking turns going ahead before the other responding. With the set tied at 20, Youngstown State took four of the next five points to put the Jags in danger of losing the set. IUPUI responded with a kill by Dean and the Penguins committed an error but a kill by Margeaux Thompson, who led the Penguins with 17 kills, gave YSU set point. Corrissa Remter picked up a kill to pull IUPUI within one and Dean served an ace to tie the set.

Three-straight service errors, two by the Jags and one by the Penguins made the score 26-25 in favor of Youngstown but Wright got a kill to tie the set. A kill by Rebecca Schlechte gave IUPUI set point and an error by YSU gave the Jags a 2-0 match lead.

The Jags came out sluggish in the third set falling behind 9-4 and eventually 12-5. IUPUI scored four-straight to get within three, highlighted by a block the duo of Hoffman and Allie Pogue. A 5-0 run by the Penguins put the set out of reach and Youngstown took the third by a score of 25-19.

Trailing by one at 14-13 in the fourth, IUPUI allowed Youngstown State to score four of the next five to take an 18-14 lead. The Jags would not get closer than three until YSU earned set point at 24-20 and IUPUI fought off two points to pull within two. On the next point Hoffman was called being in the net to give the Penguins the set and send the match to fifth.

Coming in to the match, IUPUI was 3-2 in five set matches and Youngstown State was 0-1 on the season. After a kill by Wright and back-to-back kills by Remter, IUPUI looked like it might improve to 4-2 after taking a 6-2 lead. Up 8-4, IUPUI give up six-straight points to fall behind 10-8. Down 10-9, the Jags committed three-straight errors to fall behind 13-9. Two kills by Wright and a block by Hoffman and Schlechte made the score 13-12 but Youngstown State earned match point on a kill. Schlechte's kill fought off a match point but another kill gave the Penguins the match.
