JAGUARS BATTLE BUT FALL SHORT IN FIVE-SET LOSS AT GREEN BAY

IUPUI forced a fifth-set after losing the first two sets but could not complete to comeback, losing its fourth-straight match.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – IUPUI battled after falling behind 2-0 to force a fifth set, but lost 3-2 (25-16, 25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 15-13) to Green Bay on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 13). The loss is the second-straight five-set loss for IUPUI.

Maddie Dean led the Jaguars (6-13, 2-4 Horizon) with 12 kills, hitting .212 for the match. McKayla Wright was the only other Jaguar to finish with double digit kills with 10. Both Haley Hoffman and Corrissa Remter finished with seven kills with Hoffman hitting .222 and Remter a scorching .385.

The loss is IUPUI's fourth-straight loss after beginning conference play with two-straight wins. After being swept by both Wright State and Northern Kentucky the Jags have lost their last two matches in five. In the loss to Youngstown State, IUPUI lost a 2-0 lead, losing the last three sets. This time IUPUI almost turned the tables and pulled the same feat against Green Bay (12-6, 4-2 Horizon).

The Jags lost the first two sets but battled back to force a fifth. In the last set, Green Bay took an early lead but IUPUI had an answer every time Green Bay tried to pull away with the Jags scoring two-straight points to even the set at nine on Green Bay errors. After the Phoenix scored three of the next four points, IUPUI responded getting another error and Remter delivered two of IUPUI's 12 service aces to put the Jags up 13-12. A block by Green Bay on Hoffman tied up the set and Wright committed two attack errors to end the match.

IUPUI's defense finished with 61 digs, led by 22 for Rachel Hickey and 16 for Rhiannon Schuenemann, and the Jags block finished with eight, led by Hoffman's four, but IUPUI could not stop Green Bay's Taylor Wolfe. The Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year finished with 22 kills and added 15 digs and five blocks while hitting .390.

IUPUI fell behind early in the first set going down 6-1 before picking up four-straight points after kills by Dean and Allie Pogue. The Jags eventually fought back to tie the set at nine following a Green Bay error. That error sparked a run by the Phoenix that saw Green Bay outscore IUPUI 10-3 and take control of the set at 19-12 on route to a 25-16 set win.

Set two was IUPUI's turn to jump out early going up 5-1 thanks to kills by Dean and Johnson and three Green Bay errors. After a block by the duo of Hoffman and Wright, IUPUI found itself up 10-4. The Jags' next three points all came off of errors by the Phoenix as Green Bay started to climb back in the set and tie the frame at 13. A kill by Dean put IUPUI up 14-13 but Green Bay rattled off five-straight points to go up 18-14.

The Jags would pull within two after a kill by Wright at 20-18 but the Phoenix responded with a 3-0 run and pulled away for a 25-20 set two win to put IUPUI in a 2-0 hole.

Needing a win in set three to keep the match alive, IUPUI got a boost from its offense. After hitting .028 and .079 in the first two sets, the Jags hit .296 in the third on route to a 25-19 set win. Things looked bleak for IUPUI early in the set as the Jaguars fell behind 10-4 and 12-6. A kill by Remter sparked a run for the Jags that featured back-to-back service aces to pull within three.

Down 16-11, Hoffman sparked another run with a kill. Four of the next five points came on service aces by Wright and after a two kills by Johnson, a kill by Dean and an ace by Rachel Hickey, IUPUI took a 22-17 lead after a 10-1 run. IUPUI closed out the set with a kill by Dean and two Green Bay errors to send the match to a fourth set.

With the Jags down 14-12 in the fourth, IUPUI began a run, started by another Green Bay error. Two kills by Dean and an ace by Hickey put IUPUI up 17-15 and the Jags would puss the lead to 21-16 with the help of two Remter kills. Green Bay would fight back to pull within one at 21-20 but back-to-back kills by Wright and a Remter ace gave the Jags set point and two points later IUPUI would force the deciding set.

IUPUI will stay on the road to finish the first half of conference play as the Jaguars will play at Milwaukee and UIC next Friday (Oct. 18) and Saturday (Oct. 19).
