IUPUI (4-8-2) to host former league foe Western Illinois at 6:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium

10/29/2019 3:20:00 PM

Western Illinois (Oct. 30 - 6:00 p.m.) // Live Stats

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team will cap a season-long four-game homestand on Wednesday night (Oct. 30) when the Jaguars host Western Illinois (4-11) at 6:00 p.m. at the on-campus Carroll Stadium. The homestand has been a roller coaster of sort as the Jags have dropped Horizon League contests to Cleveland State and UIC, sandwiched around an impressive non-conference victory over Cincinnati last Tuesday night. Head coach Brian Barnett's squad will hit the road this weekend when the Jaguars return to Horizon League play at Detroit Mercy on Saturday (Nov. 2).

MATCH INFO
  • Wednesday's match will kickoff at 6:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. There will be no broadcast of the match, but live stats will be available at kickoff.
  •  Admission is just $5 for ages 13-and-up and just $2 for youth, ages 3-12. IUPUI students are admitted for FREE with a valid Crimson Card and parking is FREE during home events in lots 59, 63, 80 and 86.
THE SERIES
  • IUPUI is 10-11-2 all-time against Western Illinois in a series that dates back to 1998. IUPUI hasn't defeated the Leathernecks since winning at home 3-0 on Oct. 20, 2012. Since then, IUPUI has gone just 0-4-1 against the Leathernecks.
  • IUPUI is 9-1-1 against WIU at home and 1-8-1 in matches played in Macomb. WIU has won both neutral site matchups with the Jaguars, having knocked the Jags out of postseason play in 2006 (in Rochester, Mich.) and 2009 (in Rochester, Mich.).
  •  WIU won last year's meeting in Macomb by a 1-0 score on Sept. 18, 2018.
JAG SCRATCHES
  • IUPUI enters play at 4-8-2 on the season and 2-3-1 in Horizon League play.
  • Last week, the Jags ripped off an impressive 1-0 victory over Cincinnati as sophomore goalkeeper Quinn McCallion dialed up his second shutout of the year and junior Cameron Petersen netted his first career goal in the game's 50th minute on a free kick. The Jags came in severely undermanned as junior Tommy Patacca sat out after accumulating his fifth yellow card of the season a game prior and two other starters were missing due to injuries. The win snapped a four-game losing streak to the Bearcats.
  • Senior midfielder Pedro Valladao was named one of 30 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award on Sept. 23. He was one of just two selections from the Horizon League and was the lone selection from the Division I schools in the state of Indiana. However, Valladao was not selected among the 10 national finalists, as announced on Oct. 11.
  • Senior midfielder Yan Souza was named the Horizon League's Offensive Player of the Week after tallying the game-winner in the Jags' 2-1 win at Northern Kentucky in the game's 89th minute. Souza took a feed from Alan Aguilar and drove a shot off an NKU defender and into the open net. Cincinnati-native Chris Workman also scored his first career goal in that game as he was playing just minutes from his hometown.
  • The Jaguars win at NKU was IUPUI's first regular season road win since September 2014 and first regular season league road win since October 2012.
  • IUPUI launched year three of the Jaguars' 'Real Men Read' program earlier this fall, having worked with seven IPS Schools, spanning 16 fourth grade classrooms.
  • Aguilar fueled the Jaguars' 2-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne, tallying goals in the 61st and 64th minutes. The winner came off assists from Gianni Catenacci and Fernando Borges and he added insurance just more than three minutes later by converting the fourth penalty kick of his career.
  • Souza has a team-high four goals while Catenacci has a team-high four assists. Aguilar is second on the team with three goals scored and both Kirezi Freddy and Valladao have two assists each.
  • Junior back Tommy Patacca leads the team with 1,153 minutes played and Corey Goede is next in line with 1,113 minutes. Only five field players - Yan Souza, Riley Shives, Pedro Valladao, Landon Malott and Ethan Diedel - have appeared in all 14 matches so far this season.
  • IUPUI went 5-10-4 last season and 4-3-1 in Horizon League play, earning a spot in the league's postseason tournament. The Jags then won the program's first postseason match since 2007 by upsetting Green Bay in the opening round. IUPUI later took eventual league champion UIC to penalty kicks in the semifinals round.
  • The Jaguars were picked to finish seventh in the Horizon League, according to the league's preseason polls.
  • IUPUI returns its top two scorers from a season ago in senior midfielder Alan Aguilar (11 points) and sophomore back Corey Goede (eight points). In addition, McCallion (1.22 GAA) returns in net and five other starters - Tommy PataccaCameron PetersenAnthony Saporito, Shives and Pedro Valladao - all return.
