INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI volleyball took the first set but fell to Wright State in four sets, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26). The Jags were led by senior
Kaitlyn Johnson, who finished with 11 kills.
Johnson matched her career-high with the 11 kills and hit .286 for the Jaguars (6-16, 2-7 Horizon).
Haley Hoffman was second on the team with 10 kills and led the team with a .346 hitting clip.
Defensively, IUPUI was led on the back line by
Rhiannon Schuenemann with 17 digs and
Rebecca Schlechte finished with 12. Schlechte also collected 34 assists. At the net, IUPUI finished with nine blocks, as Hoffman and
Maddie Dean tied for the team lead with four.
IUPUI was down 18-16 in the first set but back-to-back kills by Johnson and a block by the duo of Hoffman and Johnson gave the Jags the lead. Dean added a service ace to cap a 4-0 run. Later in the set, the Jags used another 4-0 run to earn set point at 24-19. After two Wright State points, Hoffman ended the set with a kill.
The Jags hit .250 in the first set and held Wright State (17-5, 6-4 Horizon) to just .125. The next two sets flipped as Wright State hit almost .400 on route to a 25-11 second set win and hit .212 in the third to win 25-18. In both the second and third sets, IUPUI did not hit above .054.
IUPUI also hurt itself in the match, committing 18 service errors.
In set four, after falling behind 16-11, the Jags scored three-straight, including back-to-back blocks. The run ended though as Wright State scored the next six points. IUPUI was not ready to roll over as the Jags scored six of the next seven points but the Raiders were able to score two more points to end the match with a 25-21 fourth set win.
IUPUI will be back in action on Sunday (Oct. 27) with a match against Northern Kentucky at 4 p.m.
