JAGS SUFFER 3-0 LOSS TO NORTHERN KENTUCKY

IUPUI was led by McKayla Wright with 14 kills in the loss to the Norse.

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI volleyball was led by McKayla Wright with 14 kills but the Jaguars were swept by Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 27). The Loss is the eighth-straight defeat for the Jags after beginning conference play 2-0.

IUPUI (6-17, 2-8 Horizon) struggled on offense against the Norse (11-11, 4-6 Horizon), hitting just .150 and committing 21 errors. With the loss, IUPUI now sits two games out of the sixth spot for the final position in the Horizon League Tournament with six matches left to play.

Wright hit a season-high .256 for the Jags and her 14 kills were the most for the senior in her last four matches. Fellow senior Haley Hoffman again had an efficient day on the offensive end with seven kills and hitting .467, also a season-high hitting percentage. Kaitlyn Johnson finished the match with eight kills, Allie Pogue had six and Maddie Dean tallied four.

On defense, Rhiannon Schuenemann tallied 17 digs to lead the Jags and Pogue finished with 12, the second time the freshman has reached double-figure digs in her last three matches. Freshman Allison Cook notched a career-high with eight digs.

IUPUI only finished with four blocks on the night, but Hoffman tallied her 25th solo block of the season, the third-highest mark in a season in IUPUI history. The senior is just three sky of the single season record of 28 set by Kaitlyn Hickey in 2013.

IUPUI again hurt itself again at the service line, committing 11 service errors, the third-straight match and fifth in last six matches to hit double-digit service errors.

The Jags were down 7-5 in the first set after a kill by Pogue but Northern Kentucky went on a 5-2 run to put some space between the two teams. The teams would trade points with the Norse holding an 18-14 lead until scoring two-straight to go up six. IUPUI got back within three on a 3-0 run with a kill and ace by Pogue and another kill by Wright but the Jags would not get any closer, falling in the first set 25-21.

Set two did not start well for the Jags with IUPUI falling behind 11-3. IUPUI was in catch-up mode and pulled within four after a 5-1 run was capped by a block from Hoffman and Rebecca Schlechte. Another 3-0 run by IUPUI made the score 19-16 in favor of the Norse but NKU would score six of the next eight points to end the set.

In set three, down 12-11, IUPUI got a kill from Wright and ace from Schlechte to take a 13-12 lead. From there IUPUI would score two points for every one NKU point, eventually holding a 19-16 advantage. A kill by Hoffman and error by NKU gave the Jags a 22-17 lead and it looked like IUPUI might keep the match going but NKU went on a tear, scoring the next eight points to win the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.

IUPUI will remain at home for the next weekend, playing host to UIC on Friday (Nov. 1) and Milwaukee on Saturday (Nov. 2).
