The IUPUI men's soccer team will look to make up some key ground when the Jaguars host UIC (10-4, 4-1 HL) on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26) at 1:00 p.m. at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. IUPUI comes in on the heels of an impressive 1-0 win over Cincinnati earlier this week while UIC tipped league leader Oakland by a 3-2 overtime score in Chicago last weekend. Saturday's match is the third of four consecutive home matches for the Jaguars as head coach
Brian Barnett's squad will close the regular season with five out of six games on their home pitch.
MATCH INFO
- Saturday's match will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) is on the call and live stats will be available at kickoff.
- Admission is just $5 for ages 13-and-up and just $2 for youth, ages 3-12. IUPUI students are admitted for FREE with a valid Crimson Card and parking is FREE during home events in lots 59, 63, 80 and 86.
THE SERIES
- IUPUI is 0-2-2 all-time against UIC, including a 1-1 double overtime draw in last year's Horizon League Tournament in Dayton, Ohio, before the Flames advanced on penalty kicks. UIC won the regular season meeting in Chicago, 4-0.
- IUPUI is 0-1 in the lone meeting in Indianapolis, dropping a 4-2 decision on Sept. 30, 2017.
- Sean Siasia tallied the Jaguars' goal against the Flames in last year's Horizon League Tournament off an Anthony Saporito assist in the game's 57th minute. The Jags yielded the equalizer in the 80th minute before falling in PKs, 4-2.
JAG SCRATCHES
- IUPUI enters play at 4-7-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in Horizon League play after back-to-back league losses to Oakland and Cleveland State after opening league play 2-0-1. The Jags have been outscored 17-11 on the season and been shutout six times, while recording two shutouts of their own.
- The Jags come in off an impressive 1-0 victory over Cincinnati earlier this week as sophomore goalkeeper Quinn McCallion dialed up his second shutout of the year and junior Cameron Petersen netted his first career goal in the game's 50th minute on a free kick. The Jags came in severely undermanned as junior Tommy Patacca sat out after accumulating his fifth yellow card of the season a game prior and two other starters were missing due to injuries. The win snapped a four-game losing streak to the Bearcats.
- Senior midfielder Pedro Valladao was named one of 30 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award on Sept. 23. He was one of just two selections from the Horizon League and was the lone selection from the Division I schools in the state of Indiana. However, Valladao was not selected among the 10 national finalists, as announced on Oct. 11.
- Senior midfielder Yan Souza was named the Horizon League's Offensive Player of the Week after tallying the game-winner in the Jags' 2-1 win at Northern Kentucky in the game's 89th minute. Souza took a feed from Alan Aguilar and drove a shot off an NKU defender and into the open net. Cincinnati-native Chris Workman also scored his first career goal in that game as he was playing just minutes from his hometown.
- The Jaguars win at NKU was IUPUI's first regular season road win since September 2014 and first regular season league road win since October 2012.
- IUPUI launched year three of the Jaguars' 'Real Men Read' program earlier this fall, having worked with seven IPS Schools, spanning 16 fourth grade classrooms.
- Aguilar fueled the Jaguars' 2-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne, tallying goals in the 61st and 64th minutes. The winner came off assists from Gianni Catenacci and Fernando Borges and he added insurance just more than three minutes later by converting the fourth penalty kick of his career.
- Souza has a team-high four goals while Catenacci has a team-high four assists. Aguilar is second on the team with three goals scored and both Kirezi Freddy and Valladao have two assists each.
- McCallion has been brilliant this season, registering a 1.25 goals against average and 60 saves in 1226 minutes of action. He's registered two shutouts this season and has six in his two-year career.
- Junior back Tommy Patacca leads the team with 1,070 minutes played and Catenacci is second with 1,063 minutes.
- IUPUI went 5-10-4 last season and 4-3-1 in Horizon League play, earning a spot in the league's postseason tournament. The Jags then won the program's first postseason match since 2007 by upsetting Green Bay in the opening round. IUPUI later took eventual league champion UIC to penalty kicks in the semifinals round.
- The Jaguars were picked to finish seventh in the Horizon League, according to the league's preseason polls.
- IUPUI returns its top two scorers from a season ago in senior midfielder Alan Aguilar (11 points) and sophomore back Corey Goede (eight points). In addition, McCallion (1.22 GAA) returns in net and five other starters - Tommy Patacca, Cameron Petersen, Anthony Saporito, Shives and Pedro Valladao - all return.
- All total, IUPUI returns 14 of the team's 17 goals from a season ago.
- Head coach Brian Barnett is in his fourth season on the Jaguars' sidelines.
SCOUTING UIC
- UIC is 10-4 overall this season and 4-1 overall in Horizon League play. The Flames have outscored their opponents by a 35-22 margin on the year and average 2.5 goals per game. Bar Hazut leads the club with nine goals (three game-winners) and 22 points while Jesus Perez has five goals and a team-high eight assists. Bukola Abdulwahab is third on the team with 13 total points on five goals and three assists. UIC has gotten goals from 12 different players and points from 16 different players.
- UIC is 3-4 on the road this season with road wins at Dayton, Detroit Mercy and Western Michigan. The Flames lone league loss of the season came at Northern Kentucky on Oct. 5 by a 3-2 score.
- Sokratis Vasilas has played every second in goal this season, recording a 1.51 goals against average and 48 saves with a pair of shutouts. All total, he has a .686 save percentage on the year.
