CHARLESTON, Ill. - IUPUI junior
Krystal Grubb earned an A Flight tournament title at the Eastern Illinois Invitational over the weekend with three wins. Three other Jaguars also earned at least one singles win during the two-day event.
Grubb began play with an 8-4 win in the first round against Eastern Illinois and an 8-3 win against Eastern Michigan earned Grubb a spot in the finals. In the championship round, Grubb picked up the title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over another competitor from Eastern Michigan.Â
Gabrielle Ochalik also competed in the A Flight but lost her first round match by a score of 8-6 to an Eastern Michigan player. In her next round in the consolation bracket, Ochalik dropped her match in a tie-break, 8-7 (5).
In the B Flight, both
Sarah Lounsbury and
Marta Krakowski lost their first matches by scores of 8-5. In the consolation bracket, Lounsbury won her match by a score of 8-0 and Krakowski won in a tie-break 9-8 (5).Â
Samantha Hayward won her first match in the C Flight with an 8-6 win but fell in the semifinals by a score of 8-4.
Diya Matta fell in her first round match 8-5 but did win her consolation match by a score of 8-1.
In doubles play, the team of Lounsbury and Hayward won their first match in the A Flight, 6-1 but lost in the next round 6-2. Grubb and Ochalik also competed in the A Flight earning a first round win 6-2 but lost in the semifinals 7-5. Grubb and Ochalik would win the third-place match with a 6-2 win.
In the B Flight Krakowski and Matta teamed up for two wins beating a team from Eastern Illinois 6-3 and a team from Eastern Michigan 6-1.
The Jags will be back in action at the ITA Regionals from Oct. 17 to Oct. 20.
