WILLIAMS' FREE THROW LIFTS JAGS TO OT WIN AT MILWAUKEE

IUPUI had four players score in double figures as the Jags won their first overtime game of the season.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Macee Williams' free throw with under a second left on the clock to give IUPUI a comeback overtime victory over Milwaukee, 67-66 on Thursday (Jan. 24). The win was the first overtime win of the season for IUPUI and is the fourth-straight win overall.

Despite shooting just 7-for-17 and 5-for-9 from the free throw line, Williams led the Jags (12-7, 6-2 Horizon) with 19 points and collected her fifth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Sydney Roule matched her career-high with 14 points, going 4-for-6 from the three point line and Holly Hoopingarner also added four with three threes. Tamya Sims finished with 13 points, including some crucial shots down the stretch of regulation.

After both teams traded a free throw to start overtime, Milwaukee (9-10, 4-4) took the lead on a jumper by Megan Walstad, who led the Panthers with 21. IUPUI tied the game after back-to-back free throws from Hoopingarner and a Williams' layup put the Jaguars up two. The Panthers responded with a put-back layup, tying the game at 66 with 1:09 left.

The two teams traded turnovers and with seven seconds left, head coach Austin Parkinson drew up a play that got Williams the ball on the block. Williams was fouled on the jump hook attempt but missed the first free throw. The second attempt hit every part of the rim before falling through the net to give the Jaguars a one point lead with .7 seconds on the clock. Milwaukee's last attempt would fall short as IUPUI earned the crucial Horizon League victory.

Overtime would not have been possible if not for a comeback that began after Walstad hit a three to put Milwaukee up 43-29 with four minutes left in the third quarter. From that moment on, IUPUI shut down the Panthers, holding them scoreless the rest of the frame as the Jags clawed their way back in to the game.

IUPUI began the run with a free throw from Morgan Allen and two free throws from Williams. From there, the Jags went deep and Roule hit two threes and Hoopingarner hit one. After Roule went 1-for-2 from the free throw line to end the quarter, IUPUI had gone on a 13-0 run to pull within one. Sims jumper to start the fourth quarter gave the Jags their first lead since 2:04 left in the second quarter and capped the run at 15-straight.

The rest of the quarter saw multiple lead changes and after Milwaukee took a three-point lead with just over three minutes left, Sydney Hall tied the game with three. Sims put IUPUI back up two with just under two minutes on the clock and neither team would score until Walstad put back a miss with three second left.

Sims, who beat Milwaukee on a buzzer beater layup last season, got the ball at the top of the key but her driving layup was blocked as the game went to overtime.

IUPUI used a 5-0 run at the end of the first quarter with four-straight from Sims to take a 12-6 lead after one and pushed its lead to nine after a three from Roule. Milwaukee used a 7-0 run to erase a six-point deficit and take its first lead of the game, eventually taking four-point lead in to the halftime break.

QUOTEABLE

"Tonight was a huge game for this team because the ladies dug down deep in the second half and fought their way back in the game. It seems like we always have close games against Milwaukee," said Parkinson. "Sydney Roule was huge off the bench tonight and really lifted our team's energy. We have had a tough go in overtime so for us to have one go our way was great."

QUICK NOTES
  • IUPUI won its first overtime game of the season after dropping its first three that went to an extra frame. The Jags lost their first Horizon League contest of the season in overtime against Wright State.
  • IUPUI's 67 points and nine assists were the fewest in a win since a 64-59 victory over Indiana State on Dec. 3 when the Jags dished out just eight helpers.
  • Sydney Roule has now hit four threes in back-to-back games and the third time the sophomore has hit four from deep this season.
  • Macee Williams recorded her first double-double since a 20-point, 10-rebound effort at Southern Illinois on Dec. 21, the Jags last non-conference game.
  • Williams 17 shot attempts were the most since firing up 21 at UTSA over the Thanksgiving break.
