GREEN BAY , Wis. – For the second-straight game IUPUI went to overtime, for the second-straight game
Macee Williams came up big in the extra period to lead the Jags to a win. IUPUI took down Green Bay 67-63 in overtime to push its winning streak to five games and end Green Bay's six-game winning streak.
Five Jaguars (13-7, 7-2 Horizon) finished in double figures, led by Williams who posted another double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Tamya Sims,
Katelyn O'Reilly and
Sydney Hall all finished with 12 points and
Holly Hoopingarner added 10, including a huge three in overtime.
Poor free throw shooting almost cost the Jaguars in regulation as IUPUI missed four-straight free throws with a chance to close out the game. After the fourth missed free throw,
Sydney Roule battled to get the offensive rebound and was fouled. With a chance to put the Jags up three, Roule missed the first but did give IUPUI a two-point lead by hitting the second with seven seconds left.
That left just enough time for Green Bay (12-7, 7-2 Horizon) to hit a layup with just over two seconds left and after Hoopingarner's three from half court came up short there was another five minutes needed to decide the winner.
In the extra frame, Williams got things started with an offensive rebound and put back layup to give the Jags a two-point lead. Sims' jumper on IUPUI's next possession increased the lead to four. After a Green Bay free throw, Williams hit one-of-two from the line to keep the lead at four with one minute left in the game.
Green Bay responded with two free throws but on IUPUI's next possession, Williams drove, drawing the defense and a kick out eventually found an open Hoopingarner who hit a three to put IUPUI up five. The Phoenix quickly responded with a three of their own and Williams was put on the free throw line with 24 seconds left.
Williams, who came to the line having hit 6-of-10 for the game, calmly stepped up and hit both free throws to put the Jags back up four.
On Green Bay's next possession, the Phoenix got two dead-on looks around the basket but could not convert and Williams secured the defensive rebound to ice the game.
IUPUI began the game on fire, scoring the first eight points of the game on two Hall threes and a Hoopingarner jumper. After Green Bay cut the lead to five late in the first, Hall responded with another three and
Agatha Beier's layup at the buzzer had IUPUI up 20-10 after the first quarter.
From there, Green Bay's defense kicked in to high gear, holding the Jags to just 18 points over the next two quarters, including a 12-2 run to start the second half to get back in to the game. Green Bay took the lead with just under five minutes left in the third for the first time in the game but IUPUI responded with two free throws.
After Green Bay tied the game later in the third, Hall responded with a three and IUPUI took a one-point lead in to the final quarter. IUPUI twice pushed the lead to six in the fourth after baskets by Williams but Green Bay held IUPUI scoreless for almost two minutes down the stretch, outscoring IUPUI 9-3 to close out the quarter and force overtime.
QUOTABLE
"Our ladies had a tremendous mindset coming in to the game. We knew there would be some highs and lows but credit our ladies for staying tough in overtime in a difficult environment," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "When Tamya [Sims] attacks like she did in the second half, it is incredibly hard to guard. Macee [Williams] battle all game inside cleaning up with 14 rebounds. Having two overtime games this weekend and coming out on top is a great building block going forward."
