Box Score BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - IUPUI women's tennis came up just short in their season opener against Illinois State, falling to the Redbirds 4-3 on Sunday (Jan. 20). The Jags had three wins in singles play from freshmen.
In their first dual match of the spring season, freshmen
Gabrielle Ochalik,
Sarah Lounsbury and
Meghan Bernard each picked up wins in singles action. Ochalik won her No. 2 singles match after losing the first set 0-6, coming back to win 6-2, 6-4 and Lounsbury, playing No. 3, also picked up a three-set win after dropping the first set, 3-6,7-5, 10-5. Bernard pulled off a straight-set win taking her No. 6 match 6-4, 6-4.
In the remaining singles matches,
Christina Stankovic fell in the No. 1 match 6-0, 2-6, 0-6, while
Krystal Grubb lost at No. 4 (6-3, 6-1) and
Mariella Pessina lost at No. 5 (6-4, 6-2).
The Jags lost the first point of the match in doubles play, dropping all three matches. Ochalik and Lounsbury lost 7-6 at No. 1, Stankovic and Grubb fell 6-2 at No. 2 and Pessina and
Samantha Hayward lost 6-4 at No. 3.
IUPUI will remain on the road for its next two matches, taking on Valparaiso the next time the Jags hit the court on Friday, Feb. 25.
