NORMAL, Ill. – IUPUI women's tennis team will take to the court for the first time in 2019 with a match at Illinois State on Sunday (Jan. 20). The match against the Redbirds will begin at 2 p.m.
Head coach Marisa Arce will get a good look at her young squad that features just one senior (
Mariella Pessina), one sophomore (
Krystal Grubb) and five freshmen (
Meghan Bernard,
Samantha Hayward,
Sarah Lounsbury,
Gabrielle Ochalik, and
Christina Stankovic).
The Jaguars have seen Illinois State before this season as IUPUI competed in the Redbird Duals in September during the fall season. IUPUI was swept in the five singles matches against Illinois State but Lounsbury and Grubb both took their matches to three sets.
IUPUI had better success in the doubles matches with the team of Grubb and Stankovic winning their match 6-4 and Ochalik and Lounsbury also won 6-4. Pessina and Hayward fell in their match 7-5.
The last time IUPUI faced off against Illinois State in a dual match was in 2013 with Illinois State winning 5-2.
This is the beginning of a three-match road trip for the Jags before their first home match against UIndy on Feb. 6 at 1 p.m.
