INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team will kickoff the 2018 Horizon League slate on Saturday night (Sept. 8) when the Jaguars host Detroit Mercy at 7:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN3 as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) describes the action.
The Jaguars (0-2-1) are coming off a 2-2 double overtime draw at Evansville last weekend in a game they played short-handed for 85-plus minutes. Sophomore
Tommy Patacca scored both goals for the Jaguars while freshman defender
Corey Goede assisted on both in his collegiate debut. Freshman
Anthony Saporito was sent off in the game's 25th minute with a straight red card, forcing head coach Brian Barnett's squad to play with 10-men in sweltering 90+ degree heat. His team responded, drawing even in the 40th minute on Patacca's second career goal and later taking the lead in the 71st minute. Both goals came on similar Goede long throws, resulting in Patacca redirecting headers past UE goalkeeper Frederik Reimer.
IUPUI weathered an Evansville offensive storm until the 86th minute when Hunter Deweese netted the equalizer.
Patacca became the first IUPUI player with a multi-goal game since
Uriel Macias scored twice against Northern Illinois on Sept. 28, 2016. Goede became the first player with two assists in a game since that same night when Joshua Ayala setup both of Macias' scores.
Freshman goalkeeper
Quinn McCallion continued to prove he's an elite shot stopper, making seven saves in 110 minutes. For the year, McCallion has recorded 21 saves and a 1.19 goals against average in three starts.

JAGS MAKING AN IMPACT: Last spring, the IUPUI men's soccer team signed Fishers-native Tyler Harris to a letter of intent to join the program through a partnership with Team IMPACT. Harris, an 11-year old battling cystic fibrosis, was on the sidelines for his first game when the Jaguars hosted Bradley earlier this season. Harris has already had a profound impact on the Jaguars' program as members of the team have also visiting the sixth-grader at home and have plans to support him at upcoming cross country meets and other events.
QUOTABLE: "Today's game was an uphill battle. We let up an early goal and we were down to 10 men with plenty game left to play. As a group, we decided to come together defensively and put in the effort to come back. With each game the team is gradually making progress. We're heading in the right direction," Patacca said after Sunday's draw at Evansville.
SCOUTING DETROIT MERCY: Detroit Mercy comes in at 1-3 overall to start the year with all four outcomes coming on the road. The Titans lone win of the season with a 1-0 victory at Robert Morris. Daniel Iyok and Mohamad Miri have the Titans' goals on the season while Kevin Tapchom has the team's lone assist. Two different goalkeepers have earned starts for UDM with Evan Mazurek going 1-1 with a 1.50 goals against average and eight saves and Devin Mendez is 0-2 with a 2.00 GAA and seven saves.
INSIDE THE SERIES: IUPUI is 2-6-3 all-time against Detroit Mercy and hasn't defeated the Titans since 2012. Last year the Jaguars lost on the road, 2-1 in overtime despite a goal from Macias off an
Alan Aguilar assist.
NEXT UP: IUPUI will take on Eastern Illinois on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 4:00 p.m. Eastern in Charleston, Ill.
