BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – IUPUI volleyball got back on the winning track with a four-set win over Nicholls State to begin play at the Bowling Green Invitational on Friday morning (Sept. 14) before falling to Bowling Green to end play on Friday.
Senior
Maggie Gibson led the way for the Jags (3-10), posting her fourth triple-double of the season with 11 kills, 16 assists and 13 digs. All of Gibson's totals were second on the team.
Fellow senior
Elizabeth Scott led all Jaguars with 13 kills.
Maddie Dean finished with nine kills on a .467 hitting percentage and
Haley Hoffman added eight kills on a team-high .471 clip.
Rebecca Schlechte led the Jags with 25 assists and
Rachel Hickey added eight assists to go along with a team-high 16 digs.
Hannah Oehlberg finished with double-digit digs, tallying 12 to go along with seven kills and
Rhiannon Schuenemann posted 11 digs.
After dropping the first set 25-22, IUPUI rebounded jumping out to an early lead after a kill by Oehlberg and block by Hoffman and
Kaitlyn Johnson put the Jags up 10-4. IUPUI maintained a five-point lead until a kill by Gibson and block and kill by Hoffman pushed the lead to 19-11. Nicholls State tried to stay in the match with a 3-0 run to make the score 23-17 but a kill by Oehlberg and service ace by Schlechte ended the frame.
Nicholls State took an early lead in the third set but the Jags used a 5-0 run to flip the score. The run started with a two kills by Scott sandwiching a Nicholls State error. After a time out, Gibson added a kill and Schlechte added another service ace to make the score 12-10 in favor of IUPUI. The set would go back and forth with Nicholls even taking a lead at 18-17.
With the score tied at 19, IUPUI got two errors by the Colonels and a Scott kill to take a 22-19 lead. The Jags continued the run after a timeout, with another kill by Scott and two more errors gave the Jags the set, 25-19.
Neither team led by more than two until kills by Dean and Scott put the Jags up 11-8 in the fourth. IUPUI maintained the lead and stretched it to 17-13 with a run that had three attack errors and a kill by Hoffman. Kills by Dean and Johnson plus a block by Dean and Scott put IUPUI up 22-16 and the Jags picked up the win after a kill by Dean and another Nicholls State error.
IUPUI did not fare as well in the second game of the day, dropping their match against Bowling Green in straight sets. After hitting over .200 as a team against Nicholls State, the Jags hit just .053 against the Falcons.

Haley Hoffman and
Maddie Dean all had five kills. Both Gibson (15 digs, 11 assists) and
Rebecca Schlechte (14 digs, 13 assists) tallied double-doubles for the Jags.
Rachel Hickey led all IUPUI players with 16 digs.
The Jaguars finish up play at the Bowling Green Invitational with a match against Marshall on Saturday (Sept. 15) at 2 p.m.
