MUNCIE, Ind. - IUPUI's offense could not get on track in a three-set loss to Ball State on Tuesday night (Sept. 11). The Jags (2-9) only hit .091 as a team in the defeat.
Senior
Elizabeth Scott was the Jags biggest weapon tying her season-high with 16 kills and hit a season-best .538.
McKayla Wright finished second on the team with 10 kills and added 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Rebecca Schlechte led the team in assists with 19 and
Maggie Gibson was second on the squad with 14.
On the defensive end,
Rachel Hickey led all Jaguars with 13 digs and
Maddie Dean led the way with three blocks.
Things got off to a rough start for the Jags, hitting -.029 in the first set. After
Hannah Oehlberg's kill made the score 4-2 in favor of Ball State, the Cardinals would score eight of the next nine points to take control of the set. IUPUI would never get closer than six the rest of the way as Ball State took set one 25-12.
IUPUI again fell behind early in the second set, after a Ball State block put the Cardinals up 11-4. Later in the set, back-to-back kills by Scott helped the Jags pull within five at 20-15. After a Ball State timeout, a kill by Wright made it a four-point game. The Jags managed to get within three, three times the rest of the set, but each time Ball State had an answer and closed out the frame 25-20.
The Jags began set three much better taking a 4-3 lead after a Wright kill but Ball State responded with a 7-0 run to take a 10-4 lead. IUPUI responded with a 3-0 run of its own featuring two kills by Scott and a block by Dean and
Kaitlyn Johnson to make it a two-point game. Two points would be as close as the Jags could get the rest of the way as Ball State would fend off any rally and take set three 25-20 to end the match and hand IUPUI its fifth-straight defeat.
IUPUI will be back in action over the weekend at Bowling Green with three matches. Two matches will be on Friday (Sept. 14) and the Jags will finish up the tournament on Saturday (Sept. 15).
