CHICAGO – IUPUI moved on to the second round of the Horizon League Softball Championship coming back in dramatic fashion to beat the No. 3 seed Youngstown State, 8-6 on Wednesday (May 9).
The Jags scored eight unanswered runs, including four in the top of the seventh. Entering the final inning down 5-4,
Kristin London drew a full count walk to start the inning.
Adison Lorsung followed with a single for her second hit of the day. The Jags got on the board in the next at bat as
Sabrina Trevino put down a sacrifice bunt. The throw to first was off the mark and London scored to tie the game.
After a fly out,
Delainey Turner dropped in a flare down the right field line to score Lorsung and give the Jags the lead. The Jags continued with a two-out rally as
Delilah Wright singled to left to bring home the third run of the inning.
Haley Ginger's hot shot to shortstop was not fielded and IUPUI took a three run lead.
The bottom of the inning saw more drama as
Megan Overton allowed the first three runners to reach and a run to score. After a pop-up and a fly out put runners on second and third, Overton buckled down and earned her 10
th strikeout of the game to end the game and send the Jags to the second round.
"We talked before the tournament about staying present in the next pitch, no matter what was going on or what the score was," said head coach Elisabeth Beirne. "I think they really did that. The first couple of innings our batters were struggling, our pitchers were struggling and things were not going right but they just kept fighting and things started to connect for us."
IUPUI had five different batters finish with an RBI and three batters finish with two hits. Lorsung and Overton both finished 2-for-4 and Turner went 2-for-3. The Jags also drew eight walks, led by Wright who drew three free passes.
Overton picked up the win but things did not start smoothly for the Second Team All-Horizon sophomore. Overton walked the first two batters and a passed ball would bring home the first run of the game for Youngstown State. The next at bat was a single to bring home another run. After a strikeout, a two-run home run put the Penguins up 4-0.
Youngstown State added another run in the second on an infield single after the first batter of the inning reached on a walk and was advanced on a wild pitch and ground out.
After the first two innings, Overton regained her control and allowed just one base runner over the next four innings while striking out seven batters.
"With pitchers it can be anything, it is such a comfort feel when you are out there and if you are not feeling that comfort it can throw off the timing of your pitch," said Beirne. "I think [Overton's] timing was thrown off a little bit, but she did a really good job working through it until she found her momentum."
The Jags had chances early, stranding five runners in the first three innings. IUPUI finally broke through in the fourth inning. A leadoff single by Lorsung was followed by a walk to Trevino. Two batters later, Turner singled to load the bases.
Overton brought home the Jags first run getting hit by a pitch. After a fly out, Ginger earned a full count walk to bring home run number two.
Mandy Dallas delivered the big blow of the inning with a line drive double all the way to the center field wall that scored two and brought the Jags within one.
IUPUI moves on to take on Oakland in the second round on Thursday (May 10) at 3:30 ET/2:30 CT.
