JAGS ADVANCE AS OVERTON THROWS A TWO-HITTER

IUPUI came from behind for the second-straight game to force a matchup with top-ranked UIC in the semifinals.

CHICAGO – The IUPUI Softball team continued its run in the 2018 Horizon League Softball Championship with a 4-2 win over the No. 2 seed Oakland on Thursday afternoon (May 10).

"I think we are just playing really good team ball right now," said head coach Elisabeth Beirne. "No one is being selfish and everyone is just staying in the moment and we have people stepping up in the moments that we need them."

Sophomore Megan Overton shut down the Golden Grizzlies offense after allowing a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. After the first inning, Overton allowed just one more hit and scattered four walks while striking out eight batters. The two hits were the fewest allowed by the Jags in the postseason since Brooke Boetjer threw a no-hitter against Fort Wayne in 2015.

"[Megan] is not trying to do too much. She is not trying to overpower [batters]," said Beirne. "She is just trying to get the ball in there, getting good break on the ball and having them mishit it."

With the Jags having to play catch-up for the second-straight game, IUPUI broke through in the third after Overton, Delilah Wright and Haley Ginger singled to load the bases. After a strikeout, Kristin London came through with a single back up the middle to score Overton and Wright and knot the game at two.

The next two innings would remain scoreless but the Jags grabbed the lead in the top of the sixth. London walked to lead off the inning and capitalized on an Oakland blunder in the next at bat. Adison Lorsung put down a sacrifice bunt to move London over and after the Lorsung was thrown out at first, London realized no one was covering third base for the Golden Grizzlies and advanced another sixty feet.

In the next at bat, Sabrina Trevino put the Jags on top with a double off of the top of the wall down the left field line.

"It is a coach's dream, obviously. Any time you can take that free base it hurts the other team and helps us and we turned it in to a run," said Beirne. "We have been preaching that all season. Any time we can put the pressure on them we want to do that."

Oakland threatened in the bottom of the sixth, getting runners on the corners with two outs, but Overton got a strikeout to end the inning.

IUPUI got some breathing room in the seventh as Wright singled and moved to third on Ginger's third hit of the day. Dallas flew out in foul territory to left field but it was deep enough to score Wright and put the Jags up 4-2.

Overton closed the door on any comeback bid by Oakland setting the Golden Grizzlies down in order as the Jags advance to take on the top seed UIC Flames on Friday (May 11) at 3:30 ET.
