JAGS TAKE SERIES AGAINST NKU WITH 4-0 WIN

Megan Overton threw her second-straight complete game shutout against the Norse.

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI earned a series victory over Northern Kentucky with a 4-0 win on Saturday afternoon, taking two of the three games against the Norse.

For the second-straight game Megan Overton was dominant, throwing her second-straight complete game shutout. It was Overton's third complete game shutout of the season.  It is the first time since 2015 that IUPUI has had a pitcher throw at least three complete game shutouts in a season.

"I'm just sticking to the basics, paying attention to spin, and with our defense behind me right now, I am putting balls on the ground and we are fielding them and throwing them out," said Overton.

"Everything in softball starts from the circle," said head coach Elisabeth Beirne. "We know when we put her out there she is going to keep us in ballgames. We don't need the shutout but we will take it every time.

IUPUI's (10-20, 6-5 Horizon) offense got things going in the second inning as Mandy Dallas doubled to the wall in right field to lead off the inning. With two outs, Delainey Turner came up with the big hit, singling up the middle to bring home Dallas.

The Jags struck again in the bottom of the third beginning with a one-out walk drawn by Overton. Overton moved to second on a groundout and IUPUI continued its success with two more two-out runs.

Haley Ginger grounded to the shortstop who threw wide of first and allowed Overton to scamper home. Dallas was next and hit her second double of the game, bringing home Ginger and giving IUPUI a 3-0 lead.

IUPUI's fourth run of the game came in the fifth when Ginger hit a double of her own and Overton came in to score her second run of the game.

"When our offense is clicking it is so much fun," said Overton. "Everyone is having fun, it is so much more relaxed and that is when we play our best, when we are relaxed."

The four runs were all Overton would need as the sophomore only allowed two hits and walked just one batter while striking out four. The Norse put one runner on third base, coming in the top of the seventh with two outs, but Overton got a swinging strikeout to end the game.

"I think it is important to try to take every series down the stretch," said Beirne. "Our conference is very evenly matched so every win we can get is going to be important down the stretch."

IUPUI will begin the second half of the conference season against the preseason favorite UIC Flames. The three-game set will take place in Chicago on Tuesday, April 10 and Wednesday, April 11.
