CHICAGO, Ill. – IUPUI had chances but lost a pitcher's duel, falling to UIC 1-0 in game one of its series with the Flames on Tuesday (April 10).
IUPUI (10-21, 6-6 Horizon) left eight runners on base in the loss, going 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and 1-for-7 with two outs in the game.
UIC (15-15, 4-3 Horizon) got on the board in the first after a leadoff walk, stolen base and passed ball moved the runner to third. The next batter doubled to bring home what would be the only run of the game.
IUPUI's first chance to tie came in the fourth as
Haley Ginger led off the inning with a single and
Mandy Dallas followed with a single of her own. A sacrifice bunt by
Maddy Griffin moved the runners to second and third but Ginger was thrown out at home on the next play and a ground out followed to end the inning.
The Jags threatened again in the fifth with
Delainey Turner and
Delilah Wright singling to start the inning.
Megan Overton singled in the next at bat but Turner ended up out on the play. A ground out put the tying run 60 feet away but another ground out ended the threat.
IUPUI would get a walk and a two-out single in the sixth but Turner lined out to end the inning.
Despite picking up the loss, Overton (L, 9-10) was brilliant yet again. After allowing the run in the first inning, the sophomore settled down, only allowing three hits the rest of the game and stranding six Flames on base. Overton finished with five strikeouts to go along with four walks. She has now allowed one run or fewer in each of her last four starts and eight of her last nine outings.
IUPUI and UIC will finish up their three game series with a double header Wednesday (April 11) starting at 4 p.m. ET.
