INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI (9-20, 5-5 Horizon) began its series with Northern Kentucky (16-10, 5-5 Horizon) by splitting a double header in blistery spring conditions on Friday afternoon (April 6).
"I thought the team came out and played really well today," said head coach
Elisabeth Beirne. "Megan really set the tone with her pitching and solid at bats."
GAME 1: IUPUI 2, NORTHERN KENTUCKY
Megan Overton (8-9) continued to do Megan Overton things, throwing her second complete game shutout of the season. On top of that, Overton helped her own cause, crushing a two-run home in the bottom of the third.
Overton did not go unscathed but escaped damage throughout, scattering nine hits and leaving 11 Northern Kentucky baserunners on base.
Northern Kentucky looked as though it was going to strike in the first as the Norse loaded the bases with one out but Overton got a pop up to
Sabrina Trevino in foul territory and induced a line out to
Haley Ginger to end the inning.
IUPUI got two runners on in the first but could not get a run across after a pop up by
Mandy Dallas ended the threat.
Northern Kentucky threatened again in the second, putting runners on second and third with two outs but another groundout ended the frame.
The only runs came in the bottom of the third after
Delilah Wright led off the inning with a single to third base. In the next at-bat, Overton found a pitched she liked and drove the ball deep over the left center field fence to put the Jags up 2-0. It was Overton's first-career home run.
Northern Kentucky would leave runners on in the fourth and fifth innings but come away empty. The Norse tried to rally in the top of the seventh with two outs. Three-straight singles to the left side of the field loaded the bases and put the tying run on second.
Overton buckled down and got the next batter to strike out swinging to end the game and secure the victory.
GAME 2: NORTHERN KENTUCKY 8, IUPUI 5
Both teams brought their offense to game two of the double header that would see snow start to swirl for the last two innings.
IUPUI got started in the first, as Megan Overton scored after a throwing error by NKU's catcher after a dropped third strike.
Maddie Keeley would come across for the Jags second run on another throwing error.
The Norse would tie the game in the top of the third with two runs and take the lead in the fourth as a runner came across after a wild pitch by starter
Dezirae Leonard.
IUPUI answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on a single by
Kristin London after Overton escaped a rundown between third and home.
The Norse got to Leonard in the fifth, scoring three runs and chasing her from the game. Back-to-back doubles to right center field put NKU up 6-4.
A solo home run and a throwing error brought home two more runs in the top of the seventh to push the NKU lead to 8-4.
IUPUI started to make a comeback in its last at bats and
Adison Lorsung hit her first home run of the season but a run was taken off the board as it was ruled Lorsung passed Mandy Dallas on the basepath and IUPUI fell 8-5.
The two teams will meet at 2 p.m. on Saturday (April 7) to finish the three game series.
